there were a brother and sister in it who were very attached to each other (almost to the point of incest, in retrospect) - based in a castle? in scotland? maybe historical? but it was definitely a book for children (anyway, it was in the kids' section of the local library) and i probably read it around 1965 . . .

Was it 'the Owl Service' by Alan Garner? Definitely a 60's book. It is set in Wales in a big house, possibly it was a castle...... there are time slip elements to it , harking back to the mysterious celtic past ..... quite a dark and haunting book for teens with a particualrly intense central teen relationship in it ...almost a brother and sister thing. Hope this helps.
