Hi
You don't say how old a teenager you are so I thought I'd post this for your interest. My two fantasy books below cater for ages 7 - 13 for boys and girls. However, I do know that many adults read these too. So why not try The Wishing Book by Grahame Howard. This is the first novel in a trilogy and is pure fantasy. It features 4 children - 3 boys and a girl who find a book with magical wishing powers. They have quite a few pranks with the book as they try out their new find and these have amusing results. Eventually, they wish to go to Mars and this is where the adventure and thrill really picks up. Once on Mars, they find that the Chief Highness of the Martians, wants the book for himself and will stop at nothing to gain the control of the whole Universe. He throws everything at them - Martian warriors and creatures in his quest to obtain this book. There are twists and it is difficult for the children to know who they can trust. Ths is an edge of the seat fantasy adventure with a sequel The Wishing Book 2 - Return to Mars out on 30 November with Amazon.co.uk taking pre-orders now. The third one will be released early next year. Check them out on Amazon.co.uk or check the author's website www.authorgrahamehoward.co.uk. If this does not suit your age range, my apologies.

For historical fiction featuring strong teenage characters, try Girl With a Pearl Earring and The Birth of Venus: Love and Death in Florence. (I've just realised that both these books are named after paintings, but that's just a coincidence!)

For historicals try:
Rosmary Sutcliffe Mary Renault (Greek series - The King must die etc.) Jean Plaidy Anya Seton Norah Lofts Phillipa Carr Victoria Holt Nigel Tranter for medieval Scottish history Eve Ibbotson Cynthia Herrod Eagles - Dynasty collection starting with The Foundling. A huge series about the Moreland family through the centuries starting in middle ages. Read it in sequence if you can. Somewhere on these discussion forums, either in children's or fiction, there's a posting asking for historical books for a 12 year old, that might not be exact title. Dozens and dozens of suggestions on there.

LEP says:
Actually, Fiona H, I think that you will find that Girl with a Pearl Earring was named specifically after that painting because the subject of the painting is who the book is about. The writer is speculating that the girl was a serving girl in the artist's, Vermeer's, household who he fell in love with/had an affair with.
However, in reality I suppose the girl could have been his wife or whoever.

For a fantasy/historical/romance you might like Across the Nightingale Floor. That is the first book of a series.

Hi, try Midnight never come by Marie Brennan. It's historical and fantasy, set in Elizabethan times, around the court of Elizabeth 1 and the faerie court below London. x

Take a look at "Hattori Hachi: the Revenge of Praying Mantis". You can read some pages and see reviews on Amazon. Girl teen heroine with lots of action and excitement and some Zen philosophy too...

Space Girl says:
if you like fantasy, perhaps you should try Mirror Bound by Nissa Gordon.
It's about a teenage girl who's just discovered everything about herself isn't true, her father has lied to her and she doesn't know who to trust; there's also a twist of romance with one of her body guards who is perhaps far too old for her.
