Hi, does anyone remember a book set in the 50s or 60s (it was in a similar vein to Noel Streatfield, but not) about a couple of young teenagers at ballet school - the lad was French and a big football fan? The last scene was where he finally kissed the girl in a snow storm (sigh - I was such an innocent romantic then...).
I have no idea of the title or author but it was towards the middle of the first half of the library's junior fiction shelves somewhere near 'Emil and the Detectives' (I can see it in my mind's eye, but it's fuzzy). That's not quite as weird as it seems - I spent a lot of my childhood reading my way through those shelves.
This sounds to me like "Dance for Two" by Jean Ure, but that should have been further along the shelf from where you remember! The boy, Noel, is Belgian and likes football and moves to England to live with his aunt and uncle, who reluctantly let him continue with ballet. He meets an English girl, Colleen, who is just starting ballet, a bit late, but she works hard and is talented and she and Noel become partners and boyfriend/girlfriend. I loved this book so much that I tracked down a second hand copy a few years ago, which is why it's fresh in my mind! Maybe it is the one you are looking for - hope so!
