 Hattori Hachi says:
Have a look at Hattori Hachi on Amazon - you can read some pages and reviews. Fifteen year old heroine, loads of action and adventure - and they have a great deal on the price at the moment too!

hi Amanda. I'm a teacher and read lots of YA stuff to help point my students at quality fiction. If you like historical romance you could try Unclaimed heart by Kim Wilkins. Normally Kim writes horror for adults but this is her first forray into young adult fiction. the book is about a girl whose dad is involved in shipping and may or may not have been a pirate in the past. It is set in the 18th century. the main character stows away on her dads ship believeing he is off to look for the mother she never met. They end up in the west indies and rescue an abused boy who workes as a pearl diver. lots of mystery and romance.

The best and most exciting read I have come across for ages is the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Absolutely cracking sci-fi/fantasy novel with a brilliant 16 yr old heroine. read the reviews on amazon. this is just about to be filmed in hollywood and will be huge. Scary, moving, funny and with some very interesting things to say about people and society, ive been recommending this to everyone, adult and young adult alike!

You might also like kelly Armstrong's series featuring a young necromancer just coming into her powers. the first book in the trilogy is called The Summoning, followed by The Awakening. This is one of Kelly's YA series but is actually quite scary. I would say there isn't actually very much difference in the scare level between this series and her adult fiction although it is less graphic.

happy reading!

There's a new book out just recently called Pastworld by Ian Beck. It's about a giant theme park in London that's an exact replica of Victorian England where people live in exactly as they did back then. It's well written, exciting and imaginative and also has some romance. Should be popular.

 Jen Errik says:
At that age my daughter particularly liked 'The Red Necklace' by Sally Gardner - set during the French Revolution. Also 'The Declaration' by Gemma Malley. (Also Twilight, but I imagine you have either read it or not already, if you're a reader.) My other daughter liked 'The Book Thief', 'Noughts and Crosses' by Malorie Blackman and 'My Sister's Keeper' by Jodi Picoult.
Eva Ibbotson is good for historical romance - and it might be worth trying Georgette Heyer as well. Daughter(2) did enjoy Heyer's 'The Grand Sophy' . As for fantasy, have you tried the Megan Whalen Turner books, starting with 'The Thief'? (If you do try them - try to avoid reading spoilers before the first one - it's more fun reading it not knowing how it all works out.)

The 'Hunger Games' sounds good as well - I've seen so many recommendations for it that I plan to read it soon. And not historical, romance or fantasy but 'Deadline' by Chris Crutcher was good - it's an American set book about a teenager who finds out he's dying, and how that changes the way he lives.
I hope you find something you enjoy.

If you like historical fiction try Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli. A very moving story about the Holocaust as told by a young Jewish boy.

Mirror Bound by Nissa Gordon - it's the first in a new series, fantasy and sci-fi

Hey, I'm 14 and a total bookworm too, high five! :D (Ok that was totally gay!)

Touch the dark - Karen Chance. 1st book of a trilogy, if you like vamps and supernatural stuff - with a steamy scene or two thrown in - I can't recommend a better book than this, everything about it is amazing.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins. If you love books and haven't read this you SERIOUSLY need to! It has no faults!!! (+ it's gonna be massive when they ruin it by making it into a film, so you might as well jump on the banwagon now!)

Poison Study - Maria V. Snyder - Different from anything else I've read. It's fantasy and brilliant.

The Host - Steph Meyer - 1st time I read I was thought it was good, I've read it like 4 times now and it's just 'one of those books'. Fantastic.

Noughts and Crosses - Malorie Blackman. I bet you've already read this though. If not, why?!

City of bones - Cassandra Clare. One of the best love interets ever :D

hope I helped :)

Hi Amanda,

You can find all three of your genres in Marianne Curley's Old Magic and her Guardians of Time Trilogy:
The Named
The Dark
The Key

Same with:
N.M. Browne's trilogy:
Warriors of Alavna
Warriors of Camlann
Warriors of Ethandun
(I haven't read the last book yet, but the first two are great!)

A lot less of the history:
the Wicca series by Cate Tiernan (in the US: Sweep). The first is Book of Shadows. Awesome!

And something completely different:
Meredith Ann Pierce's trilogy about unicorns:
Birth of the Firebringer
Dark Moon
The Son of Summer Stars

If you like cats, you might also like the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. The first book is Into The Wild
www.warriorcats.com

Good luck and happy reading.

Hi Amanda
My thirteen year old daughter devoured Gone With the Wind this summer.... she admitted she rushed through the war bits which is probably ok!
.. I got it for her cos I heard author Esther Freud on the radio earlier in the year saying how much she had loved it when she was 13.

 Gm Howard says:
Why not try The Wishing Book by Grahame Howard. This is the first novel in a trilogy and is pure fantasy. It features 4 children - 3 boys and a girl who find a book with magical wishing powers. They have quite a few pranks with the book as they try out their new find and these have amusing results. Eventually, they wish to go to Mars and this is where the adventure and thrill really picks up. Once on Mars, they find that the Chief Highness of the Martians, wants the book for himself and will stop at nothing to gain the control of the whole Universe. He throws everything at them - Martian warriors and creatures in his quest to obtain this book.
There are twists and it is difficult for the children to know who they can trust.
Ths is an edge of the seat fantasy adventure with a sequel The Wishing Book 2 - Return to Mars out later in the year and the third one early next year.
Check it out on Amazon.co.uk or check the author's website www.authorgrahamehoward.co.uk.

Try 'The Bone Cradle' by C. E. Trueman, it's excellent, and the author has just released a sequel 'Grey Amber' availble for pre-order. I'm an adult, but still really enjoyed 'The Bone Cradle' and I intend to read the sequel. You should also have a look at http://www.flamingnet.com/ which is a website that reviews teen/young adult books.

At 14 I lost myself in Daphne Du Maurier books. Her best ones are Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and Frenchman's Creek.
I'd also recommend The Book Thief. Great story and characters. Bring tissues, though.

It has already been mentioned, but you should definitely read The Hunger games by Suzanne Collins. Also the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. The first book is Maximum Ride:The Angel Experiment. If you like historical fiction, you should try some of Mary Hooper's books, they are set mainly around the 16th/17th century. You might also enjoy some of Eva Ibbotson's books. They are historical, but also have some romance in them.
