Hope you can help. We are soon to visit the area where Tarka the Otter was set and thought it would be a good idea to read the book to my 6 and 4 year old before we go. I haven't ordered it yet but read it has a sad ending. Could anyone tell me if this is appropriate reading for these ages before I buy?
I read it in my early teens and was not keen so I doubt it will keep even the most book-hungry infant interested. It is sad at the end and includes death. There is a film of it too but I don't think the ending is any different.
From what I can remember it has got a sad ending. Tarka dies I think. I would suggest that you get it from your library and read it frist yourself and then you can judge whether it's too sad for your children.
Yes, Tarka dies at the end, in an heroic struggle with an otter hound. It's a wonderful book but Williamson pulls no punches - his book reflects the realities of the natural world. I would have thought that six is a little young for this book.
I read it at 5. Infact, it was the first book I read by myself. It was my mam's way of explaining death, worked well, but this is the woman who explained insest using Star Wars... Anyway, I loved the book and it has stuck with me all these years.
I would not recommend it if they are very sensitive, I read it when I was little and I cried continuously! Hedgehogs are eaten in the night and Tarka hears them screaming, babies are frozen to death in winter - things like that. It upset me terribly, I was a little traumatised. But I was very sensitive, and I did read it on my own. Perhaps if you read it ahead, you could miss those parts out when you read it to them.
