As a teacher, I thought that I should invest in an electrical pencil sharpener to make life easier. On the whole, I am pleased with the Jakar pencil sharpener as it has equipped my classroom with pots of perfectly sharpened pencils although there are things which could be improved on:

-if you let the machine guide you, it sharpens pencils to a point which is too sharp for my liking. You can, of course, pull out the pencil of your own accord to achieve a less sharp point;
-it is difficult and dangerous for your fingers to recover a lost pencil lead in the motor (on several occasions, I thought that the working life of the sharpener was over as I just could not sort out the jam despite all manner of pokings and shakings);
-it weighs quite a bit which means careful handling is required when cleaning it/trying to recover a jammed pencil lead;
-the shavings receptacle could do with being bigger.

I hoped to allow my pupils to use the sharpener but my worry that they will jam a lead in it and render the machine unusable has meant that I only allow myself to use it. Even when I use it, I dread the next lead jam!

Had this sharpener for a couple of years now. When bought it was the best on the UK market (THE best electric sharpener - the benchmark of electric sharpeners is a Panasonic model sold for the US market). It is still very good and still the best priced. Although generally more expensive Swordfish models are now also worth a look.
What it does well: It sharpens pencils! Quickly and to a sharp point. It can handle a large volume of pencils before the overheat kicks in. It's great for the primary classroom. It's cutter is changeable (I'm on my second already).
It stops sharpening once the point is sharp.

What it does less well: It needs to be butted up against something or use two hands as it slides across desktops when in use. [The US Panasonic model has suction feet and stays exactly where you put it - if you can find one with this feature it's very worthwhile].
It's spills pencil dust around it when in use.
It doesn't handle colouring pencils so well - They are softer - but if you pull them out early you get to know when to stop.

Overall: A good electric pencil sharpener that does the job well, for a good price and will serve you well.

I know it's only a pencil sharpener but what a satisfying feeling it is to have only sharp pencils in the house after years of pulling out dull or broken ones. Sometimes the small things in life make it all worthwhile.

A must for any primary teacher. Although it does not sharpen thick pencils it is fab for normal ones. Very robust and worth every penny just for the time it saves me.

Great sharpener minimal effort required and no more blisters! I bought it for my restaurant. We go through alot of pencils! It does overheat after a while but if you let it cool down for 10 mins its good to go again. Would reccommend if you do lots of sharpening!

Having battled with probably 20 failing convential pencil sharpeners over the years and watched them mangle pencil wood and pencil lead alike, I forked out for this item.

It is simply brilliant.

Quick and slick. No more scrabbling around for useable pencils at homework time.

It is small and discrete- tucked out of sight but within easy reach of a kitfchen socket- always on hand at need- but I usually round up stray pencils once a week and sharpen 10 -15 in less than 5 minutes. Very satisfying.

The only downside is that it is quite noisy- but since it sharpens a pencil in a few seconds than this is no great hardship.

If you have one or more children of infant or primary school age, you really do need one of these. Buy one. It is worth every penny.

Found this to be a very worthwhile purchase - no problems with overheating and my 5 year old uses it safely and easily - it does create a long narrow point but that hasn't been a problem - I had considered a manual sharpener but was put off by the comments re difficulties in use for young children - recommended!

This is much better than the one I had from Staples for some years, eventually conking out. This one has a mains plug and not the DC thing which tend to hum. Its a nice weight so you don't have to hold it while inserting the pencil and the point is cut to a long low angle so is really sharp. Very satisfied. However, I wish it would take larger pencils such as Faber Castell watercolour pencils which are hexagonal and don't fit at all - there are other sharpeners which cope with a range of sizes and I wish I'd chosen one, but other makes are much more expensive or battery powered I seemed to find. That said, this is what it is and does its specific job really well.

Bought this for my wife as a Christmas present, it is what she asked for. She is a teacher and this was to replace her original one that she had for five years. She has started using it and likes the fact once it has sharpened the pencil it stops.
