A Pocket full of Rye 23 Jan. 2003
By Catherine M. Dorkin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
A.J. Cronin depicts a tale of a simple advanced teenage boy. Perhaps some of it is autobiographical . . . Cronin is deeply in love with the story, it is told with such affection for each character. The young boy grew up through out the British isles he, Laurence Carrroll, meets some very engaging persons. Terence, the dashing swindling cousin; Pin the teacher; Nora, his second love and cousin. His mother is Laurie's first love, pushing him in all sorts of things, with great admiration for it all.
Miss. Greville, is the most interesting and astonishing of all. Upon Laurence and his mother losing their house, Miss. Greville takes them in. With Miss. Greville's lunatice antics and empty promises coupled with some of the most enthralling experiences, Laurence becomes infatuated with everything she has to teach him.
The story grasps you immediatly when Laurence and the reader experience two very disheartening deaths and he is moved shortly thereafter to live with his odd Uncle Leo. Experience the game of cricket and a summer of botany he begins to love himself and the world.
A Song of Sixpence was not what I expected. I was expecting a parody or an advanced version of the classic poem but it was neither. In fact, nothing of the nursery rhyme was mentioned. Clever, indeed! Although Cronin never wrote about pockets full of rye or black birds, Cronin's tales is just as silly and engaging as one could imagine!!

A Real Reading Pleasure 8 Sept. 2009

I was totally captivated by "A song of Sixpence." It is, in essence, a coming-of-age story about a talented boy (something of a mommy's boy), who struggles through a series of disappointments and personal loss, encountering various engaging characters along the way who help shape his destiny. This is a delightful, solid story set in a Scotland of unspoiled lochs, steam trains, and slum children with rickets. Unlikely to disappoint if you appreciate good fiction of the old school.

A hard road for a young boy... 27 Mar. 2014
By HMS Warspite - Published on Amazon.com
A.J. Cronin's 1964 novel "A Song of Sixpence" holds up pretty well after all these years, especially for his fans. The hero of the story hero is young Lawrence Carroll, Laurie to his few friends and hard luck family in the Scotland of the early 1900's. Laurie, already an outlier for his Roman Catholic faith, loses his father early in life, and is passed around among some flinty relatives. Fortunately, along the way, a few people will take an interest in him, including a crippled scholar, a generous old spinster, a free-spirit cousin, and a loving mother. Laurie will learn to persevere, and will, finally, earn his chance in life.

The plot of this coming-of-age story is fairly predictable, but the joy is in the telling, and A.J. Cronin succeeds in this and in his authentic Scottish setting. Recommended.

quite nice 21 July 2012

once in a while i take a need to go to an "old book". AJCronin is a great writer, and though the story itself could have been longer, his writing is enjoyable, and is the reason to keep reading, in my opinion.

I got this book because I had its sequel. Gave both books away. Just not my type. Hard to read and hold interest for me.
