Product Description

Edition: 8.1 Pro Pack

Product Description

Only if you currently have a device running Windows 8.1 ("Core") operating system can you upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro (Professional) using this Windows 8.1 Pro Pack (upgrade) product. Windows 8.1 Pro allows you to connect and share your files and also adds enhanced features if you need to connect to company networks, access remote files, encrypt sensitive data, and access to other more advanced tasks.

The new Windows 8.1 start screen is your personalised home for items you use the most and can be customised according to your user preferences. Windows 8.1 Live tiles provide real-time updates from your Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail accounts. Along with the new Start screen, the lock screen now includes e-mail, calendar, and clock widgets.

To access your PC, Microsoft has replaced a standard PIN or password with a swipe gesture; unlock your PC by clicking or swiping preset locations you’ve selected on the lock screen. New functions also allow you to search for your favourite software programs, open, close, hide, resize, or run multiple apps simultaneously with the swipe of a finger or a swipe of the mouse.

Windows has also made changes to make your PC more secure by boosting its existing security features and adding "SmartScreen," which acts to prevent suspicious programs or apps from being installed or running on your machine. Finally, Windows 8 also gives you the ability to "refresh" itself to give users a new starting point and a cleaner version of Windows.

3.0 out of 5 stars No CD-ROM as advertised 25 Sept. 2014
By Geoff
Edition:8.1 Pro Pack|Verified Purchase
Despite the web page stating:
"Game Information
Platform: Windows 8
Media: CD-ROM
Item Quantity: 1"
what arrived was a small box with only a product key, but no CD-ROM. As long as you don't need a CD then this is fine. I will not review this as there are already lots of good reviews.

I would only add that Windows 8.1 is much, much better than the original Windows 8 and you will only need this Pro version if, for example, you previously upgraded from one of the more advanced versions of Windows 7 and still need extra features like BitLocker or Windows Media Centre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says 26 May 2014
Edition:8.1 Pro Pack|Verified Purchase
Was using xp on my old laptop that died. XP allowed me to work from home and in the office but when I got a new machine it came with Windows 8 which doesn't allow you to connect to a work server. When it arrives in the box my first thought was, a waste of packaging because all you get is a credit card sized bit of cardboard with the Windows 8.1 Pro Pack Key. You have to update to Windows 8.1 first then download and install Windows 8.1 Pro Pack, surely. It's a bit long winded but it's installed and I can work anywhere now, so it's all good. Happy. ;-)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Significant Improvement Over Windows 8.0 20 Oct. 2013
Edition:8.1 Pro Pack
[2014-04-02 read my added comments re Windows 8.1 Update at the end of this review]

Nearly a year ago (on 2012-10-26 to be exact) I made a review of Windows 8 under a title "Will Windows 8 Flop or Fly?". As a Windows user for many years, I was baffled by what Microsoft was up to and I chose an eye-catching title to express my bewilderment of how Microsoft got itself into alienating a significant part of its loyal customers. One year on and now we know the truth and the [self-inflicted] damage done to Microsoft.

My review then didn't catch much attention - it was lost under the very bottom pile of reviews with a tiny 22 helpful votes from 32 people who bothered to read it, despite the fact that that review was one of the first two or three to appear on Amazon on the day Windows 8 was released.

As I said before, and repeating it now, Windows 8 (and the updated version 8.1) has so many desirable features, most importantly it is fast and refined in many respects. The only major trouble is making the User Interface the same for desktop/laptop and mobile computers. The fact is that touchscreen is well suited to tablets and mobile phones (i.e., hand-held mobile computers), while non-mobile computers such as desktops and laptops need to be supported by a navigational menu system as existed in Windows 7 and its predecessors (a.k.a. Start Menu). Imagine visually sifting through randomly placed square icons to locate an App on a Start Page, as opposed to a navigation based on alphabetical order and logical organisation-by-folders of program shortcuts.

3.0 out of 5 stars 8.1 Pro upgrade installation instructions 11 May 2015
Edition:8.1 Pro Pack|Verified Purchase
Installation instructions supplied with the Product Key did not work with my upgrading from 8.1 to 8.1 Pro. I used the "Add Features" facility and upgrade was fine. For details, see: windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/feature-packs

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent upgrade 31 Dec. 2013
Edition:8.1 Pro Pack
The upgrade went smoothly albeit a bit slower than I expected.

If you need the additional features in Pro, there is no reason not to buy this pack.
