3.0 out of 5 stars 'Solid, Consistent But Unspectacular Set' 13 Jan 2013
By Antony May TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
That 'Sixty Thrills A Minute' failed to gain a U.K. release in 1981, when a year earlier the band had hit the national top twenty with 'Just Can't Give You Up', tells you a lot about this album. 'Just Can't Give You Up' was a disco classic and was as original a groove as the bands magical image suggested their material would be. Snag was though that in essence the rest of the groups material was nothing special and when lead singer, Leslie Dorsey who co wrote 'Just Can't Give You Up' (and two of the other six tracks on their debut album) left the band before the recording of this album the Mystic Merlin that remained did not have the same identity as before...

'Sixty Thrills A Minute' is then a pretty standard 80's funk album. Its well played, nicely produced and fairly consistent (as far as the fact that none of the tracks are awful) but that's about as far as I can go in recommending it because equally not one track stands out as essential here. It is therefore pointless for me to go into more detail about this album suffice to say, as the blurb accompanying this release points out, that singles 'Got To Make It Better', the title track ( and 'Get it Together' which failed to chart at all) made little impression on the U.S. R&B chart in 1981 and that sadly, I very much doubt you will be any more impressed in 2013.

This review is for: Sixty Thrills a Minute [Expanded Edition]
Most of the time when I buy back catalogue CD's like this I am upgrading from vinyl albums I already own. In this case I did not have this album before and didn't know anything about it, so it is fresh to these ears in 2012. I had already purchased the "Mystic Merlin (Mystic Merlin ~ Expanded Edition)" eponymous CD which I enjoyed and I saw this CD and had a vague recollection of the song "Sixty Thrills A Minute" which I think I used to have on vinyl back in the day, but I couldn't really remember it, so I had a listen on YouTube. I instantly remembered it and it sounded fresh. Back then I had no idea 30 years later (is it really THAT long!?!) I would be buying all these old tracks and discovering "new" classics. This album is one of those rare discoveries. This should have been in my collection already, it's superb.

There are no big standouts here because the album as a whole is at a consistently very high standard. I'm someone who plays individual tracks rather than albums. I rarely enjoy albums as a whole because usually there are tracks I consider weaker or less essential, but this CD is a fantastic listening experience as a whole. All the tracks are superb quality soul/funk/boogie (whatever you like to call it) and there is not a dud track here at all. When I saw the title "Monkey Love" I was sure that would be dreadful, but even that track is good. This CD is worth a very solid 5 stars and if you are wondering whether to buy it or not, I would say definitely go for it. The arrangements and production are punchy and tight and it oozes class.
