Product Description

simplehuman 55 litre rectangular sensor bin – ST2001
The effortless and hygienic way to throw away rubbish

Touch-free and hygienic, simplehuman's rectangular sensor bin opens immediately and automatically from any angle with just a wave of your hand. Thanks to its innovative multi-sense technology, the bin reacts and adapts to your behaviour so it won't open unexpectedly or close before you've finished your task. Its space-efficient shape makes it easy to place directly against the wall and the fingerprint-proof coating keeps it looking good for longer.

Multi-sense technology

While the bin is waiting to be used, the sensor’s trigger zone is focused in an area directly above the lid. It’s easy to reach, but precise enough to avoid being triggered by mistake when you walk nearby. Once open, the trigger zone automatically extends to become more sensitive to activity. The bin always knows if you’re still in the area and won’t close too soon. For longer chores, it can be helpful to keep the lid open – after three seconds of continued use the bin will assume you may need the lid open for longer than usual, so it automatically switches into task mode. The lid will stay open for 30 seconds, even if you step away from the bin. This mode is particularly convenient when it’s time to empty the bin. Just pull the inner bucket up into the park position – the lid will stay open, giving you all the time you need to finish up.

The simplehuman sensor bin is engineered for durability – slam the lid down, overstuff it, or even stop it with your hand and then quickly resume touch free operation like nothing ever happened.

Energy efficient

This energy efficient bin will last up to 1 year with 6 alkaline C batteries, or you can use it with an optional simplehuman power adapter. The battery compartment is easy to access – conveniently located on the back of the bin so there’s no fumbling under the lid to change batteries.

Integrated odorsorb filter

simplehuman’s odorsorb filters contain activated charcoal to absorb odour-causing agents and neutralise smells. An integrated holding case fits up to two filters and is located under the lid of your bin. The bin comes with two filters and they can be recharged in sunlight: simply expose the filter to sunlight for three hours every four to six weeks.

A simple promise

simplehuman use quality materials and subject their products to rigorous testing to be sure that they will last in tough, busy environments like your home — for years.

Item is not well protected inside the carton box, it lacks protection on each side. For the most expensive trash can ever, this is not acceptable.I had to return two times the item because it was damaged. But thanks to amazing after sales service from amazon it was not a problem. The third time the item came with a small dent on the front visible side of the trash. I decided to keep it anyway.

The trash can't be placed in front of an object (for E.G. : kitchen furniture) otherwise the sensor will detect an obstacle and won't close.

Beligum official bin liners (60l) can't be used as they won't fit.

I love the design of the product. The sensor works well for the moment (I will see in 2 years if it still works) hopefully there is 5 years warranty.

Clearly a big step up from the likes of Brabantia from whom frankly never had a product that did not break relatively quickly. This is made from much more robust materials. Am confident that will last a very long time. Design is so well though out that you can't help but wonder what possesses such smart people to design rubbish receptacles, but then you remember the price, and it all makes sense again. So far however I would say that it is worth it.

I love this sensor can from simplehuman!! 13 May 2011
By LFC - Published on
Finally! A sensor can that doesn't have false triggers! I purchased a cheaper sensor can at Costco, thinking that it would be a cool gadget and convenient addition to my kitchen. Boy, was I wrong! The Costco trash can would falsely trigger every time I walked near the trash can - even though I wasn't planning on throwing anything away. It wasted batteries because it repeatedly opened and closed whenever anyone, even my dog!, passed by the trash can. That is the last time I try to cheap out on a trash can. You get what you pay for...

In contrast, this simplehuman trash can stands out from the rest. It's modern, sleek design fits well in my kitchen - and I love this feature they call "multi-sense." Essentially, it adapts and reacts to your behavior. If you need to throw something away, it senses it, opens and closes within seconds. If you need the trash can open for longer, it magically senses this too, and the lid keeps open until you're done with the trash can.

This is the first time I've invested in the trash can and I have no regrets. It's such a beautiful addition to the kitchen - I receive so many compliments on it. I'm now thinking of getting one for my mother.

great trash can 17 July 2012

yep, it is the most expensive trash can ever and i just got it. i did get the electrical cord too so no batteries are needed. all the other automatic opening trash cans had bad reviews. the only disadvantage i see is the liners (trash bags) end up being about .76 each... my old trash bags were .20. i knew this before i bought the product and with all of the great reviews that was the only "downside". i love the simplehuman rectangular sensor trash can. it came right out of the box (packed quite well), i plugged it in put in a liner and i have a problem solved. my old trash can was not a sensor and the swing top was always falling off plus it was in the kitchen ... it has moved to a less used place. the sensor works well and only when you want to put something in it. the reviews i saw on the ""other"" sensor trash cans said the sensor would be set off if you walked by it...this does not happen with this simplehuman trash can!

Expensive - worth it! 22 Mar. 2014

We are very impressed with simplehuman products, this trash can in particular. If you had told me we would spend $250 on a trash can, I would have laughed. But, when we used a smaller version of this sensor trash can at a friend's house, it was very impressive. one of the issues when you're throwing things away is that you often have your hands full. And the flip-top units that have the foot-pedal often get damaged over time with a heavy foot. All you do for this sensor unit to open is to move your hand above it and it opens...quietly...then closes again. If you continue to use the open can, the lid will stay open longer. The larger trash can (55 liter) holds a lot of trash. And a standard Hefty "tall kitchen trash bag" will actually fit around the inner unit - just requires some stretching. And they're much less expensive than ordering the special bag-liners from simplehuman. By the way, after three years we discovered a defect in the mounting bracket of the motor that opens the lid. Simplehuman stood behind it, sent a replacement motor - and when it was discovered that the mounting bracket was broken off in the channel (so the new unit couldn't be mounted) they replaced the entire can. That's believing in your product. If we had an outlet nearby I would purchase the AC plug instead of using batteries which are replaced about every 6-8 months for our household. it's a classy trashcan - and blends well as another "appliance" in our kitchen.

Amazing Trash Bin 22 April 2013

The sensitivity level is perfect on this trash can. Not overly sensitive yet not under sensitive. The sensor will keep the lid open as long as you need it to. Works as it should. You'll never want to go back to a step trash can after using this.

Best designed sensor trashcan 20 Dec. 2012

This trash can from simplehuman replaced a cheaper older sensor trashcan from Costco. I love the clean design and the quiet functionality of the lid mechanism. Of course, this is one of the most expensive trash cans I have ever purchased but I believe it's worth the money. I also love that there are no more false triggers that occurred with the Costco trashcan and I love the giant capacity of this simplehuman model.
