4.0 out of 5 stars Humbling 16 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A very short book, read in a day. I read a lot of military history and whilst this does not purport to be such, it adds to ones insights in a most moving manner.

It is (as the description says) a simple story. Well told.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching insight into the reality of WW1 1 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well crafted simple story of the life of a normal young man who enlists for WW1. The story follows his trials and tribulations with his friends and the way they deal with the brutal reality of life at the front. This is simple fare with no gung-ho heroes or nasty villains. The story is mainly told in extracts from his letters home. He spends a lot of time extolling the virtues of the YMCA which seems to be everywhere in the story.

This is unlikely to give you any serious insight into the history of the war. However, it does give you a feel of what it may have been like for a young lad. Not for serious historians.

4.0 out of 5 stars Opens your eyes. 23 Sep 2012

I found this a good read that took you back in time to 1914. It has a real historical feel to it and is written in an old English style which added to the historic feel. Very interesting and at times quite eye opening to what the soldiers endured during the great war. For a free book it really is well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super read 4 Feb 2013

This book humbles you. A hundred years ago people were braver and so much less selfish than they are nowadays. That is a pity. I wish I knew what happened to this courageous young man.

2.0 out of 5 stars Propaganda
Seemed to be propaganda for both the YMCA and an idyllic vision of service in the trenches. Just readable and mercifully short.
