Well crafted simple story of the life of a normal young man who enlists for WW1. The story follows his trials and tribulations with his friends and the way they deal with the brutal reality of life at the front. This is simple fare with no gung-ho heroes or nasty villains. The story is mainly told in extracts from his letters home. He spends a lot of time extolling the virtues of the YMCA which seems to be everywhere in the story.
This is unlikely to give you any serious insight into the history of the war. However, it does give you a feel of what it may have been like for a young lad. Not for serious historians.
I found this a good read that took you back in time to 1914. It has a real historical feel to it and is written in an old English style which added to the historic feel. Very interesting and at times quite eye opening to what the soldiers endured during the great war. For a free book it really is well worth a read.
