Linda sings the Great American Songbook
I don't know how Linda came to team up with Nelson Riddle to record the three albums that make up this double CD, but it was a truly inspired pairing. A few of these songs are famous, particularly When I fall in love and When you wish upon a star, but many of them will only be known to those familiar with the songs of the twenties, thirties and forties.
With Nelson Riddle and his orchestra providing the backing, Linda mostly sings lush ballads. I list some of the songs with their original hit-makers - note that where a song was a hit for several artists, only the biggest is given - which is not necessarily the most famous. In some cases, a cover version was a bigger hit a few years later. For example, Bewitched was a minor hit in 1941 for Leo Reisman, but six versions hit the top ten in 1950. Five others charted higher than Doris Day, but her version is the one you are most likely to come across. On the other hand, When I fall in love was originally a hit for Doris Day, but Nat King Cole had a huge British hit with the song.
What's new (Bing Crosby)
Someone to watch over me (Gertrude Lawrence)
I don't stand a ghost of a chance with you (Bing Crosby)
What'll I do (Paul Whiteman)
Skylark (Dinah Shore)
Mean to me (Ruth Etting)
You took advantage of me (Paul Whiteman)
Sophisticated lady (Duke Ellington)
My old flame (Guy Lombardo)
You go to my head (Larry Clinton)
But not for me (Harry James)
I get along without you very well (Red Norvo)
Am I blue (Ethel Waters)
I love you for sentimental reasons (Nat King Cole)
Straighten up and fly right (Andrews sisters)
Little girl blue (Margaret Whiting)
Linda and Nelson's choice of songs is impeccable. Perhaps they would have continued to record together, but Nelson died in 1985 following years of poor health - given his health, the quality of these recordings is even more remarkable.

I had already had on vinyl all three of Linda Ronstadt's recordings with the Nelson Riddle orchestra. I had had some difficulty in getting them all again on CD, as one was hard to find, so this was just great to get the entire collection on 2 CDs in a nicely packaged boxed set. Linda has done such justice to singing these classics. I am only disappointed that I have never found a DVD that covered this TV show where she performed most of these songs. I only saw it once on TV, but still remember how fantastic in was, and what an amazing performance she gave.

Some years ago when I lived in London I used to go into the HMV shop on Oxford Street and regularly browse. One day I saw a double CD by Nelson Riddle and some Country&Western singer called Linda Ronstadt. As I liked Nelson Riddle I took a chance. In those days I made a number of subsequently regrettable decisions but this was not one of them. Linda has a beautifully clear and haunting voice with excellent diction and her collaboration with Nelson was inspired. Thirty years later I still return to this gem, I consider it ageless and some of the tracks are sublime. Please buy it and share it with others.

I loved her voice in the 70s/80s. It's still quite recognisable, here. Beautifully sung and faultlessly orchestrated and produced. Great project.

I had already bought "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" by Linda Ronstadt with Nelson Riddle, and enjoyed the CD which had her excellent singing and the last arrangements by Nelson Riddle before he died. To have all three albums made with Linda Ronstadt in one double CD album was a great find !
