This being the 242nd review, and me not exactly being COD World Champion, I'll keep this brief as there's so little so say that hasn't been said already.

It's an outstanding game from a technical/visual perspective and once I got the hang of it - which didn't take long - I loved it. This is a game I could play all night long, if not the following day too,...

1.0 out of 5 stars A very poor game!!!, 18 Feb 2010
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
I must say this is one of the most over-hyped games of history and what it delivers is a bog standard shooter. I've played the campaign through to the end and got to the last level in multiplayer (without going prestige mode).
The single campaign is alright, nothing inherently wrong with it, but it is rather short and the story is rather simplistic. However, the campaign isn't where I think the game is a let down (if the review was just based on the campaign I would probably give it 3/5) The problem I found was multiplayer. Gameplay has remained pretty much the same since COD4, however the amount of call ins is just ridiculous, it promotes a lot of camping due to the scoring for the game being predominantly based on the amount of kills you can get. This leads to a very static style of gameplay as people try and rack up enough kills to get a call in. Camping isn't helped by the fact that the maps almost encourage it,there are too many spots for people to just sit tight in, its predecessor COD4 didn't have great maps but at least it promoted less camping than these maps. There are a wide selection of weapons and customizations for them which is good, but weapons in my opinion just feel a bit lifeless, for instance, there is very little recoil to them.

All in all a very poor multiplayer experience with very little change from COD4 with little to no innovation and a bog standard campaign. A very simplistic game meant for a younger audience even though the title is an 18. Just feels like infinity ward knew the title would sell well and put very little effort in the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, but not without it's flaws, 2 Feb 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I have had this game a while now, it can be extremely fun and enjoyable (mainly the multiplayer), but is it very similar to Call of Duty 4?

Lets start off with the single player campaign, even if you just choose normal difficulty at some points in the game it can be fairly challenging. The AI are very good, they don't look as though they've just picked up a gun for the first time and started shooting with it; they are fairly realistic and not stupid.
The controls are sharp and feel just right, it is very easy to switch from one enemy to another in quick succession, with minimal effect.
The story is one of the few downsides to the game, it is extremely hard to follow, as it seems muddled up; you go from one country to another with no form of understanding i.e. you move from Afghanistan to Russia, then to America, then again to South America - I think... I lost track and got very confused.
My final point on the campaign is, it is far too short, just like COD 4, it took me no more than 4 hours to complete - which is slighty disappointing.

Next, i'll go on to the multiplayer (I mean this is why most people buy COD), in short it is brilliant, a lot more ranks to go up - now it is up to 70. All of the guns have a huge amount of attachments, like a heart-beat sensor, a thermal scope etc. Also, there are many camoflages to choose from like red tiger, blue tiger (justlike from the first game) etc.
My main concern is there are a few things extremely similar to COD 4; the perks system for example, although there are some added perks, it has all been done before. Another similar thing is the types of games you can join: team deathmatch, free for all, sabotage, search and destroy etc, they've been on COD 4, COD World at War and now this. Furthermore, the game can LAG quite a lot, it has improved from it predecessors but still not perfect.

Finally, there is special ops, which again like my first two points is very good, if you want to choose to go alone or with someone else, you will almost certainly have an entertaining experience. You can choose from three difficulties: regular, normal or hardcore, which ever you choose, you will have a blast, from: shooting down hoards of enemies, racing the snowmobiles, killing juggernauts etc. It is fun, however, you play it.

In conclusion, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a fun, challenging in parts, and truly enjoyable game, but some aspects of the game mainly the multiplayer can be very alike to COD 4. I'm not saying they are bad, not at all, but i've seen it all before. I would definately recommend buying this game, but remember it isn't perfect.

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This being the 242nd review, and me not exactly being COD World Champion, I'll keep this brief as there's so little so say that hasn't been said already.

It's an outstanding game from a technical/visual perspective and once I got the hang of it - which didn't take long - I loved it. This is a game I could play all night long, if not the following day too, such is the desire it instils to do better, to achieve more. I think I completed the single-player campaign-mode game in about 6 hours or so but I could happily do it all over again. Special Ops - which can be played solo or with a friend - not so impressed with that, at least not so far. But of course it's in multiplayer mode, when you play with real people on-line elsewhere in the world, that things really heat up and you realise you're not as good as you thought you were. Unless you practice, of course! I found that playing on-line could be frustrating for a number of reasons, not least getting shot dead by someone I didn't even see, and sometimes the screenplay could 'lag' apparently because of poor internet connections by other users, a common symptom but always annoying. But it still made me want to improve myself, make a better rank, to reach that higher standard.

I have no experience of MW1 so I can offer no comparisons, but it is surely a cutting-edge achievement and probably the benchmark in FPS gaming, pretty much a must-have I would have thought. It's low on any sense of humour as it takes itself very seriously, but clearly so too do its millions of fans worldwide. I wish I was better at it, but in the meantime I have to rate it unhesitatingly as a 5-star game, it's a sure success and in the very faint chance that you haven't got it already and you like FPS warfare games, I'd say that YOU don't need to hesitate either. Just get it. You know you want to.

PS - I didn't realise this until after I bought it, and apologies to those who will say "Well DUH, what did you expect?", but if you want to play with a friend on-line, you must both have the same platform, be it PS3, X-Box whatever. If you have different systems, you won't be able to find each other in a search. (Unless someone knows differently? ....I'm still learning!)

A brilliant game, one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars The champ is here, 20 Nov 2009
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Modern Warfare 2 is quite simply the greatest first person shooter ever made.

There, I said it. And I said it without reservation or a trace of doubt. Normally I hate when people gush all over a game just because it's new and popular, but in this case, I can't help it. No matter which point of view you look at it from, whether it be sound, graphics, gameplay, storyline, characters or multiplayer options, Modern Warfare 2 is a triumph of gaming.

It's no secret that the first Modern Warfare was an excellent game, reinvigorating what had become a tired series of WW2 shooters and turning it into something that was both relevant and compelling. It didn't hurt that its multiplayer mode was one of the most balanced, imaginative and addictive experiences in years. The task of trying to follow this up with something that not only equalled it, but surpassed it in terms of quality was nothing short of Herculean.

But they did.

Modern Warfare 2 is set several years after the events of the first game. Despite your best efforts, ultranationalists have seized power in Russia and have elevated Imran Zakhaev (the baddy of Modern Warfare) to hero status. A brutal attack on a Russian airport frames America for the crime, resulting in both countries coming to blows. Before the world degenerates into WW3, it's up to you and the other members of an elite multinational counter-terrorist force to find the guy responsible and lay the smackdown on him. It's a fairly simple setup, but the plot is rife with twists and turns. Characters switch sides, old friends and enemies pop up unexpectedly, people get gunned down without warning and a whole lot of stuff blows up, including innocent civilians.

Yes, by now everyone knows about the infamous No Russian level. It stirred up real controversy with the `games promote violence' lunatics, but really I don't see the problem with it. It's meant to be shocking and unpleasant, and to be honest if you're disturbed by the idea of shooting people in a game, you shouldn't be playing an FPS in the first place.

The thing that made the original so enjoyable was the blistering pace and frantic gameplay. When you were plunged into a firefight, you really felt like you were up against it, and that feeling has been enhanced here. Enemies make effective use of cover, suppressing fire and grenades to flush you out. And they're relentless. If you get wounded, forget about just hiding around a corner to heal up - they WILL come after you to finish you off.

Naturally graphics and sound are superb, and the voice over cast is top notch. There's Lance Henriksen (whose gravel voice can make even the worst game seem better), Kevin McKidd, Will Arnett and Keith David. If these guys were in a film together, it'd be impressive enough. The fact they were able to get them for a video game speaks volumes.

The weapon load out has been bumped up for this outing. Now there are literally dozens of pistols, submachine guns, rifles and shotguns, and they all feel individual. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it's up to you to decide which style suits you best. There's also the option to dual-wield pistols, which for me resulted in one of the coolest moments in gaming when I stormed into a room full of terrorists, twin machine pistols blazing fiery death.

But this being an FPS, it'll stand or fall based on its multiplayer. Part of the reason I waited so long before writing this review was to fully experience all aspects of this game, and it has to be said that the multiplayer options in this game are second to none. You can customise just about every aspect of your online character, maps are varied and interesting, there's a vast selection of weapons, and the whole feel and responsiveness of the game engine is just perfect. I guarantee you'll lose entire days of your life playing this, and you won't regret a single second.

Modern Warfare 2 has received a bit of stick from certain quarters with accusations that it doesn't deviate far enough from its predecessor, but I salute developers Infinity Ward for having the courage to stand by their creation. If long-running series have taught us anything, it's that constantly tinkering with a near perfect formula eventually runs the thing into the ground. There's a reason Great White sharks haven't evolved in the past 60 million years - they're already perfect for what they do, and so is Modern Warfare 2.

Buy this game. Now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just above average, 27 Feb 2010
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
I played COD Modern Warfare 1 and was soooo much looking forward to playing this game.

It was purchased for me at Christmas and it has taken me until the end of February to complete it. Why?????? because Ii just didn't enjoy the game and it didn't draw me to play it. I wanted this game to be good as the first but it just wasn't.

Sorry but for me this game is nothing more than just above average.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, 1 Feb 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Great game, maybe not as good as cod 4 but then is the sequel ever as good as the original? But it's a bloody good sequel.

Only problem with it at the moment is that in almost every single free for all there are boosters where players take it in turn to kill each-other to get nukes and level up quicker. I think this is stupid as even if you do this and go up levels loads you are still bad at the game. Sorry about the rant, but at times this game is messed up with glitches and stuff like that.

Buuuuuut.... on a lighter note this game is very good, the campaign is fun and a bit controversial but its all good fun.

The online - this is probably the main reason people buy this game, it is good, the guns are all very good and its very fun. But, the connection is quite poor and it takes for ever to get into a game, but when it does load and you do get into a good game, it rocks

thanks for reading :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Call of Duty Modern Warfare II, 6 Jan 2010
Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
While this game is certainly fun to play and has excellent graphics, and a music soundtrack written by one of the greatest Hollywood movie soundtrack composers of the day, it does unfortunately lack somewhat in terms of playing time. It ends somewhat abruptly about half way through what I was anticipating, making this the fastest PS3 game I have ever taken to complete. It is nonetheless a fun game while it lasts, but unfortunately CODMW2 poses little challenge to the experienced player.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic..., 4 Jan 2010

... and I don't use the word "epic" just for hyperbole.

My wife, who just doesn't see the point of video games, watched this as a movie epic - testament to the quality of the graphics, sound, scripting, production, AND gameplay. Whenever I was playing she would watch just to see how it unfolded - and what a twist towards the end!

Fantastic - the "special forces" storyline is gripping all the way through. The "regular" forces storyline plays like a news crew embed for the opening Afgan mission, but is clearly far fetched for the terrestrial US levels.
Also nice to see a games studio portraying the Brits in lead roles, and towards the end it feels like it's them against the world.... and that ending! I get the feeling it won't be a five year gap (in the storyline) for MW3.

Can't Wait
