4.0 out of 5 stars Beter than shaving, 31 July 2008
By Some Woman (N Yorks) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought this model because it was reduced and because I had never used an epilator before, so didn't want to spend a lot of money on one in case I didn't like it. This one comes with an icepack and shaver head.
I have used it on my legs and underarms , but not yet on my bikini line!
I found that it doesn't really hurt on my legs and that's without using the icepack. Some areas, like the backs of my legs, sting more that others, but if you pull the skin tight, it hurts a lot less. If you use the icepack it helps you keep the epilator at the right angle and it removes more hairs.
I've been using it for a few days and it does take practise and it can miss a lot of hairs so you have to keep going back over the same area. But the more you use it, the less it hurts.
It took two days to do my underarms! I had to keep stopping because it really stung. But the last time I used it, the pain had reduced and I was able to finish the job! You use a 'cap' that reduces the area of the epilator head, so removes fewer hairs at a time. I now have really smooth under arms and I know that the next time I do it it won't hurt a much.
I think the key to epilating is to just grin and bear it and the results are worth it.
I only gave 4 stars because it's a bit noisy and it didn't remove as many hairs as I had hoped in one go. But I expect that is down to user error rather than a duff machine.
Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Shaving or Waxing, 6 Sep 2008
By Why D (ABERDEENSHIRE) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
This is the first Epilator I have bought as I was recommended to buy one by a friend. A lot better than shaving and being left with ingrown hairs and itchy hair regrowth and a lot easier and less messy than waxing. Don't get me wrong it still hurts but the results are worth it. I would say that the first couple of times you just have to grin and bear it. Hope this helps someone thinking about buying one as I was very undecided with the reviews I read but would definitely recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not perfect., 16 Sep 2009
By M. S. (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
Overall I am very pleased with this product. The ice pack makes epilating legs and underarms almost painless, although I should add that I have been epilating for a long time so am not quite as sensitive as people would be who try epilation for the first time. Compared to other machines I have used, the new Philips is a lot better at grabbing all the hair in its path, which means that I normally only had to go back once to get rid of the last three strays rather than do a strip several times as it hasn't been uncommon in the past. Despite being cordless it is powerful enough to do its job well, although I find that the battery does not last long enough to do more than legs and underarms. As it also runs while being plugged in, this is only a minor complaint though. I also found this model far easier to clean than previous once, which I find a huge advantage.

At this price I would have still expected more. First of all the ice pack can not be used when epilating underarms and bikini areas, as there is no separate epilation head for these tasks, but rather a small plastic "hub" that goes on top of the normal epilation head and thus doesn't leave enough space for the ice pack. I got around this problem by simply not using the hub, but I still feel that a second epilation head for the bikini line would not have been too much to ask for. I also feel that the fact that the ice pack can not be used in those sensitive areas should have been mentioned on the box somewhere, as one of the chief reasons for paying so much for a super gentle epilator with ice pack is to make epilating these more painful areas easier. If epilating bikini zone and underarms without any extra gadgets is not a problem, then I doubt legs will be. The ice pack itself does not stay cool for as long as it takes me to epilate my entire body (legs, arms, underarms and bikini zone), so again - a replacement ice pack would have been desirable so one could switch after doing the legs.
The machine has a light that goes on when it is being charged, but there is no indication when the charging process has been completed, which I consider quite pointless. Also the manual suggests only charging the epilator when the battery is "almost empty" rather than in between epilation, which I am sure is excellent for the battery life, but highly impractical if one is trying to free ones legs of hair! As the battery already does not last long enough to do everything I want to do at full charge, I am unlikely to risk it with only half a charge. A second set of rechargeable batteries would have solved both problems in one go, as batteries could simply be switched when one runs out.
Finally Braun's latest epilator has been equipped with a little light to ease finding the hair, which I would have considered a sensible addition here too, as (at least my) hair tends to not show much in dim light.

Despite all that, it is still the most effective and gentle epilator I have ever had and while I have a lot of complaints, they are all minor.

I purchased this as I had seen it advertised on tv. I've never used an epilator before and normally shave, but like the idea of being hair free for longer.
Before buying I read lots of reviews online on this product, and everyone said that epilating does hurt, regardless of the quality of the epilator. So using this for the first time yesterday I had expected it to be quite painful. I can honestly say that it really isn't that bad. I would say it was more uncomfortable than painful. Obviously the pain factor will vary from person to person, but I personally found it to be less than being waxed!! Considering I did my underarms and bikini I was VERY impressed!!
It removed nearly all the hairs (only left the very short ones) and it took only about half and hour to finish everything which I thought was good for my first time.
I would definately recommend this epilator, and epilating in general!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Its worth it, 24 Nov 2008
This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought an epilator as i was fed up with never having smooth legs as shaving they grew back so quick, i'm really pleased with how smooth my legs now feel. i was scared when i first used it, as i wasn't sure how painful it would be, but now i don't even notice while doing my legs, it really does get so much less painful everytime you use it, so you just need to keep at, The ice pack is good at first to help ease the pain, i can do my bikini line without much pain, the only area i found that stung was the underarms, so i don't use it on that area. The only problem i get is that it doesn't take out as many as i thought it would in one go and so you have to go over the same area several times to make sure all the hair are gone, so does take a while, but you don't need to do it everyday like shaving so your time is cut down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive -works on men too, 2 May 2010

This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I've used a Braun Silk Epil for two years and will NEVER go back to that after using this epilator. I'm comparing the Philips with the Braun
Pros:
*The Philips rotates very quickly, thus epilates much less painfully;
*It takes far more hairs out by the root instead of snapping them off;
*It's light and convenient;
*Rechargeable but can be used on the charger lead (the manual recommends that you only do this when the batteries are flat), this means it is more portable;
*Doesn't get slowed down as badly as the Braun;
*It was half the price of the Braun!
*Finally, and very importantly, it doesn't tear or pinch delicate skin - this means you can do bits (anywhere that can be waxed) that you would be mad to do with the Braun. Even on upper legs, the Braun would leave 'tyre tracks' of nicks and scratches. I haven't found anywhere that the Philips will not do safely - just make sure you pull the skin tight, boys. This has come as a bit of a revelation. Not only does it not damage the skin, it doesn't hurt either;

As a man, I can do a whole body treatment -from toes to neck- in an hour and a half with the Philips - something that the Braun would take four or more (painful) hours to do. I can now do it in one session with a coffee break halfway through, whereas it was just too painful to do everything in one go with the Braun -I had to do half hour sessions over several days.
Am I overselling this?

Cons:
*No 'headlight' -this is very useful on the Braun, and its only advantage over the Philips. The lack of a light defeats some of the portability and is what costs the fifth star;
*The curved shape of the head is not always convenient -it isn't a problem most of the time, and it's caused by the beautiful simplicity of the mechanism, so, as an engineer, I forgive it;
*It doesn't take every single hair in one pass, but it doesn't burn the skin when you go over a bit several times;
*I'm not sure how long it will last - the Braun has become unusable after just shy of two years. This doesn't feel as solidly built -but if it lasts half as long, it's the same value for money because it was half the price.

This is a very impressive little machine.
I've never used an ice pack and won't use this one either, but it seems like quite a good design.
Thoroughly recommended, especially if you need to do the delicate bits. I've also no intention of using the razor attachment either, so I can't comment on that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good, 17 July 2009

This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I was some what hesitant with the thought of using an epilator but I have really been surprised. Don't get me wrong the first time you use it, it does hurt, especially under the arms! But the results are fantastic and I didn't have to use it again for another week and a half. The time between each session is getting more and more and my hair is finer (I have dark thick hair, sorry to mention that but I thought it would help!). I have been reccomending this epilator to friends.

I'm still getting used to using the epilator on my legs, I find I miss a lot of the hair and have to keep on going over it, That may be more user error though.

I usually wax my bikini line so I didn't find it too painfull to use there, a good result and easier to use that wax strips. You also don't have to wait ages for it to grow back and have that horrible 'limbo' period as the epilator picks up short hairs.

The ice pack thing does make a difference but you can't use it on under arms or bikini line which I thought to be a little odd as they are the most painfull.

I charged it for the full amount when I first had it but the charge doesn't last very long, so if you plan to take it away on holiday for a 'touch up' then take your charger.

I found the epilator easy to use and now I find it much less unpleasant. I have to also say it beats shaving. You don't get that really sliky smooth feeling as you do with shaving but you stay stubble free for much longer. Just make sure you exfoliate with the gloves provided to avoid nasty painfull in grown hairs!

My last tip, when you use it make sure you do it on a night time when you don't want to bear your legs. It can make your legs get red blotches but they totally go after a nights sleep. The more I use it the less blotcheness I get.

Hope this helps, have a happy hair removal : )

5.0 out of 5 stars impressive, 1 May 2009
This review is from: Philips HP6517 Satinelle Ice Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought a braun epilator 2 years ago, used it for 3-4 times and then I gave up, most of the hair was being break/cut instead of pulling off, it ended up with a real mess, I was quite disappointed. Until few months ago, I decided to give epilator another try, went online and read many reviews on many different brands and models, it was really hard to decide because each has good and bad reviews, hard to tell which is really doing the job. This time I was trying to look for an epilator that comes with shaving/trimming head, from previous experience, if it really doesn't work that well in pulling again, at least there is shaving head that can 'clean up' the mess later on.

So in the end, I have decided to give this product a try, so far all the reviews seem positive. I didn't have much expectation this time, but I am really impressed. It works! At first I was still worrying if 20 minutes of battery life after 1 charge can last long enough, but it only took me less 5 minutes to epilate 1 leg! Pain wasn't much of a problem to me, so I didn't use the ice pack, but if you are worried about pain, you can try that, most reviews said it helps. The shaving/trimming attachment is very useful too, I tried it out just in case and it works well.

The only problem I have is the cleaning bit, I found lots of hairs stuck under the epilation head that really hard to be reached with the brush. I know it said washable, maybe I think too much, but since hair is pulled from the root, root is kind of sticky and if water doesn't get it out, it may formed some kind of mushy hair ball inside? Well, I don't know, maybe it's just my imagination, since no one complained about that before..

Overall, 5 stars, changed a skeptic to a very happy consumer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short term AMAZING....long :/, 8 May 2010

Now, I don't know if I'm using it wrong, or it's my hair type or model thats wrong. But reading others reviews about how good and fantastic it is made me rethink.
So i brought this ages ago, last year summer time. me and my friend used to be waxing all the time, but money got tight and so i needed something like waxing to fill the gap. When i first used it, it was great! Painful but that soon went as well as the hairs! I used it on legs, bikini, under arms and even arms!It didnt get the very tiny hairs, but they weren't noticable really. After i used it, my legs were red, fades in hours, so best not use before a night out.
the instructions were confusing, saying about using after a bath/ shower then saying you should have a bath/shower after. i'm not sure if this model shown also comes with an exfoliating glove, but that came in handy from them pesky ingrown hairs! and also the ice pack, really helped at first, i just kept forgetting to put it in the freezer!
wasnt till about a week later, when i noticed my hairs coming back. im not sure how long it says they come back,or if it was just me. but my legs soon returned to their monkey ways. some parts wouldnt come back, and i would have freaky legs patterns going on.
in the end, i gave up with it, it was to much hassle for me to use for a weeks worth, and during that week i had to keep topping up on it. i still use it after i wax, just incase i miss any.

i would say it's worth a try at a cheap price, again it might just be me.

Works really well on legs - not quite brave enough to try any other areas just yet!! The ice bit is good and cools down the redness really well. Definitely better than shaving, gives a much smoother finish, but not as messy as waxing.
