Started out great... but didn't last...
After reading the reviews on this site, I decided the Braun 7681 was definitely worth a try. Charged it up and couldn't believe how amazing it was. So easy to use and practically pain free on my legs. (Unfortunately my pain threshold not so high on bikini line and under arms but got there in the end). Even better was the fact that it took almost 4 weeks before I need...

Ouch Ouch!, 28 Jun 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
Some years ago, I bought an epilator, can't remember which but it was one of the the main brands, turned it on and stuck it to my leg to give it a go. It was so painful that I immediately turned it off, put it back in the packaging and returned it to Argos very hastily!
I am a shaving fan, it is quick, easy and pain free as long as you do not cut yourself. The downside of shaving of course is that it only lasts for a couple of days before it all needs doing again.
So as I am going on holiday soon and want a longer lasting solution and on the strength of the other reviews stating that the latest epilators are much less painful I decided to give this a go.
The Silk Epil 7681 comes with various heads that you can use on different parts of your body. A sensitive head for novices like me, an underarm cap for underarms and other delicate areas like bikini line, a precision head for face and other sensitive areas and a shaving head to remove longer hair before eplilation. You also get pre-epliation wipes to help cleanse and prepare your skin before doing the job, although personally I feel that these are not essential.
You need to charge the epilator firstly, it takes about an hour to fully charge. Whilst waiting for this, I read the instructions which are quite easy to follow.
On reading the 'Important Section' of the instructions, I noted that you should not use the epilator to remove the hair on your head or your eyelashes. Why the hell anyone would want to epilate their eyelashes beats me, I am trying to get mine thicker and longer, not get rid of them, but I suppose it takes all types.........
After the epilator was fully charged, I applied the beginner cap and gingerly put it to my leg. I carefully moved it along my leg and experienced absolutely zero pain whatsover.
Wow! amazing! With more confidence I went over another area, still no pain! This is easy, the manufacturers have obviously cracked it and it is now completely pain free..........
Hang on, I suddenly realised that the beginner head was not removing any hair whatsoever, no wonder it was pain free, bugger.....!
Obviously my hair was too short for the beginner cap to work on, so if I actually wanted to remove any hair that day, nothing else for it, I put the efficiency cap on which ensures maximum contact with the skin, giving fast eplilation and tried it on my leg.
Well that certainly hurt! Quite a stinging sensation. I carried on and did find that as I got used to the sensation it was not too bad and I could endure it.
Once I had done my leg, I noticed that it did not get all the hairs out in one go and had left a few behind. However by then, my leg was starting to get a bit sensitive and a shaving like rash had appeared.
I decided to call it a night and then had another go the following day when my leg had recovered a bit. The next day the ouch factor was definately a lot better, although of course most of the hairs had gone in the first round and it was just clearing up the rest.
It would have been nice if the epilator had got rid of all the hairs in one go, but I suppose that there are going to be some shorter ones that will need to grow through a bit longer before you can get them all.
I have had my legs waxed before and feel that waxing is less painful, but only because it does a larger area all at once. With this you can only do small areas, therefore increasing the length of painful hair removing time.
However unlike waxing, you do not have to let it all grow back again before removing, you can quickly use the epilator to get rid of the hairs as and when they start to grow through.
So do I like the Silk Epil? I would say yes, for me it was not pain free and it did hurt a bit initially. However this was not bad enough to stop me carrying on and I am pretty confident that it will get much less painful the more I use it. I did try the beginner head again on my other leg when I had allowed the hair to get a bit longer, that was less painful than the faster head, but then the faster head is faster and quicker. So take your pick, slighty more painful and faster or less painful but slower and longer hair removing time.
So far I am not brave enough to try the more sensitive areas like the bikini line or underarm, but definately will, when I get my pain threshold up a bit higher!
So I would recommend this product, the different heads seem to be useful (when I get brave enough to use them!) and I think it is a good alternative to shaving or waxing.
EDITED REVIEW 18TH JULY 2008.
I have now been using the epilator for a few weeks and have to say I am a bit disppointed with the results so far. As I stated earlier in my review it was leaving behind a few fine short hairs. I have never been able to get completely smooth hair free legs no matter how slowly or how many times I redo each leg. To try to keep hair free, I have to do my legs every few days and still find that the epilator misses hairs, leaving my legs feeling stubbly.
Today, I have resorted to shaving again and for the first time am enjoying smooth stubble free legs. I will still keep the epilator and use it, but feel that if I want completely stubble free legs, I am going to have to use the razor alongside the epilator to whisk away the very short hairs that the epilator is missing. This is disappointing and I feel a bit mislead by the manufacturers claims of hair free legs for up to 4 weeks!

A total revelation!, 7 April 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
Having done a lot of research online into epilating
(after discovering that shaving was no longer an option for me - and deciding that waxing was too expensive, messy, and being revolted at the thought of regrowth) i made an investment into the latest braun offering.
After hearing numerous tales of woe - epilators being banished to the backs of cupboards and draws to repress painful memories - and plain disappointment from those who said when they tried it simply didnt work, i was fully prepared for a long painful hair removal session.
Opening the box my initial impression was "ooh it comes with a nice bag", which is convenient since it comes with a plethora of different heads (face/bikini aka precision head, efficiency head, efficiency head plus massagers, beginner head, underarm head, and shaver/trimmer. Not to mention the comb!) and a packet of 'pre-epilation wipes'.
After reading my instruction booklet to be fully informed and working out which head i needed i was ready...
Switching on the Braun Silk Epil Xpressive 7681 epil to Speed 1 i was disconcerted by the noise and the terrifying sight of the blades turning!
However i took a deep breath, and after using one of the wipes, starting at a hairy little ankle i tried...
And it was fine! More than fine!
I could barely feel it - i could feel the hairs being removed but it hurt much less that plucking my eyebrows!
So pleased was i that i bravely went upto the highest speed - still ok!
As pleasant as the massage rollers felt, i decided to brave the efficiency head on speed 2!
And it was fantastic!
Both legs done i was ready for more - i attached the underarm head and did that too! This was a little more sensitive but nothing i couldnt handle.
I even had a go on the bikini line, which also was bearable!
The results are amazing, id recommend epilating to anyone - results are as smooth as a wax, and last as long, plus you can get the little beggars as they crop up rather than waiting for a whole leg to turn into the amazon.
Plus my legs look better - since im dark - as the roots arent visible anymore, same goes for my underarms.
I think the head attachments are necessary - particularly if like me you have bony knees, the precision head is much better at angling!
I cant believe i've shaved all these years and have recommended epilating to everyone since - my mother and sister agree its painless, quick and easy and will also be investing.
This new model is quite pricey compared to the older types, but its rotating head and smartlight are the advances it has over its rivals - its well worth every penny, and compared to a professional wax it really isnt that much.
I would highly recommend this product to anyone (and have done to everyone so far!) the main issue for most seems to be the pain - and its much less than a wax. I do have a high threshold for pain, but since having tried it out on wimpy family members who agree its a odd yet painless sensation i cant understand why anyone would opt to shave given this much more satisfactory alternative.
So i'd say go for it! (after all it comes with a 2 year guarantee, and you can always return it if you have any problems)

Much Better than my old epilator, 12 April 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I have been a religious epilator-user since very young age and waxing was once or twice a year affair. Thus I was used to the pain and the time that it took.
But I decided to change my previous machine and get this beautifull epilator, since it was cordless and the light seemed a good idea in theory.
So I bought it today...
Went home and immediately charged it, then went to try it.
First of all it has a great trimming cap, which is great in order to get all the hairs to just the right lenght.
Then the massage head and the new adjustable head did the job.
I was prepared for some pain, but there was none! It was quicker than usual, more precise and virtually painless!
Furthermore, the cordless option is very comfortable and the light helps you see "the ones that got away".
I would recommend it to anyone, even beginners.
And you with the old epilators, go and get one! You will not regret it and it is worth the money.
I have yet to try the precision heads, etc. but it could only get better!
Enjoy!

Awsome product - bye bye waxing and shaving!, 6 Aug 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
After reading the last person's review I was quite excited about buying this product. Although secretly I thought it would be used once and then thrown to the back of the cupboard but how wrong was I.
My only criticism of this product is that it has a shaver plug so you have to charge it in the bathroom unless you buy an adapter (£2-3). Otherwise it's fantastic.
Does it hurt?
LEGS: not really, a little around the ankles and on the shin bone but otherwise the massagers make it quite pleasant actually.
UNDERARMS: more then the legs but nothing I can't handle
BIKINI: this is the kind of sensation I was expecting... a bit more painful but I am sure I'll get used to it
FACE: about the same a plucking
Other comments:
- the smart light is fantastic!
- the device is easy to clean
- the devise is rather noisy (but it only take about 10 minutes to do both legs)
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is contemplating it. You might think £60 is a lot but if you only ever use it 4 times on your legs you've covered what it would have cost you to have them waxed - and it's so much more fun!

no more waxing for this lady, 19 July 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I did loads of reading before buying this particular model. I didn't want the shaver attachment, but I liked the sound of the other heads that lesser models didn't come with.
My only complaint is that being new to 'electric shavers' I didn't realise it was a 'two pin' jobby. Quick trip to Sainsbury and 74p later, it was on charge. Good job I read the instructions - If the hairs are too long it hurts more (tested and true!)...so the shaver I didn't want (which comes with a cover to cut to the ideal length) turned out to be the first thing I used.
I was a bit nervous so I used the 'first timers' cover to start with.
What an odd sensation! It hurts, but it doesn't. Lots of quick sharp prickle sensations. I guess everyone is different. I quickly got brave and went to the 'full on' head. I realised that my werewolf legs (not waxed for weeks) were why it felt like it did. Most of the hairs went in the first pass and when you go back over it (and there's only a few stragglers to get) there was no pain at all. What a doddle.
So I reckon that keeping on top of it, maybe weekly, will be pain free.
You're meant to go from bottom of leg upwards (in direction of hair growth), but I found myself going up a bit, back down and then up again.
The little light was great - amazing how much shadow you make hunkered up over yourself.
I see this as an investment...several missed waxes (in assorted places) and this will have paid for itself easily.
Now, just got to let the old armpit hairs grow for a couple of days (euw)and then I can have a go at them, too.....magic...go get one.

Scared First Time Epilator..., 1 Sep 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
Ok, I started waxing about two years ago because I have very fair skin and very dark hair...I could shave one evening and it still looking dark and have stubble by the next morning. I used to be waxed every 5 weeks but decided I would have a problem going to Uni.
I would need to keep waxing because it helped to keep my hairs finer, but there wasn't anywhere I could afford being a student at Uni. My mum suggested I should buy an epilator as I could then do it as and when I pleased. She warned me however that they are quite painful.
I saw the advert on TV for the new Braun epilator and thought I'd look it up. I read LOADS of reviews before deciding to buy it as it was quite expensive...though would pay for itself after three uses compared to waxing.
I'd been letting my hair grow for the couple of weeks I waited for my epilator to arrive and when it did I wanted to use it straight away. I started charging it and read the instruction manual...well skimmed it...and found out what all the heads were for! I first used the shaving head as I had read longer hairs were more painful. I used the pre-epilating wipes though to be fair found them a bit pointless...if you have a bath or shower before hand then it softens up the skin and the hair folicles anyway, making it less painful as the hair is removed more easily.
I started epilating...with a very scared look on my face due to the loud noise being emmitted by such a tiny machine...but actually found it to be a lot less painful then I was expecting. It hurt more the first time because I had a lot more hair to do. It was great with one stroke most of the hairs had disappeared with a few strays caught by the second sweep. I don't know if it was less painful because I was used to waxing, however it was not that bad...it was more the vibrating that was the odd sensation.
I finished my legs within 15 minutes...which for a first time I thought was pretty quick (and I've now gotten quicker at it). I also tried out the under arm and bikini line. They were more painful however totally bareable.
I let my mum borrow it as I wanted her comparison to her older one...(as I have never had one before) and se loved it - tried to steal it from me! She has now bought her own and recommending it so all her friends.
Since using it for the first time I have found it much better pain wise because I epilate as the hairs grow at their different speeds...normally once a week or so. Though I have noticed as with waxing, it is never completely smooth, a slight prickle. What I do is after lightly run my razor over my legs and that solves it immediately.
I don't get any redness or bumpyness except for some redness around my bikini line which is gone by the next morning. I do moisturise afterwards though because my skin can get quite dry so that I would recommend.
A surprise for me was how easily the heads could be changed...I had it in my head that it would be fiddly and annoying but they are very easy.
I would totally recommend this product to anyone who is going to uni and doesn't want to be shaving for a big night out. I would recommend it for anyone who wants less hassel! It is a bit more expensive than other epilators however if you're going to spend £40 or another product why not spend the extra for a better product. Also it comes with a 2 year guarantee which should put your mind at ease.
I hope this review is helpful to all those looking to buy this product, I would say it is definitely worthwhile.

Totally worth the cost!, 1 May 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I've never used an epilator before, reading about how painful it is really put me off. I normally wax my legs and when I don't have time to I shave. But I don't always have time to wax and shaving seems a good idea at the time but the irritation is almost unbearable afterwards. So I thought I would have to give this a try. To be honest it was quite duanting when I turned it on; the sight of the blades and the noise. After using it for about 10 seconds I was really suprised at how painless it was! (I was expecting tears to roll down my face). It was a strange sensation but it was a lot less painful than waxing and a lot quicker. So I would definitely recommend it, it lasts a few weeks and it takes just a little longer than shaving would. Being cordless is a bonus, 1 hours charge gives u 30-40 mins which is more than enough to do a pair of legs and all the little bits you get with it.

Love it, 30 July 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
This is the first epilator I've ever used; I was put off them 20 years ago when a friend bought one, she complained it hurt like mad, and she had to let her hair grow quite long before it would work.
I've been sugaring at home for years, with the occasional salon wax when I felt like a treat.
My hair is naturally fine and blonde, and the sugaring has further weakened it. I'm also quite used to the 'pain' of whipping the hair out.
So, the epilator. I'm sure it took less than an hour to charge. I did my legs immediately, using the Massage head. No pain, all the hair off by the second pass (another advantage over sugaring, where one daren't redo an area). Then I changed to the Precision head and did my moustache and tamed the loose eyebrows on my temple. This did - what? It wasn't a tickle, it wasn't pain, possibly it felt like the static electric shock I used to give myself as a child from rubbing a drawingpin on the school desk. Nothing too extreme. Last, I changed to the Underarm head and did underarm and pubes. Underarm, fine. Pubes, a better result than sugaring but not as good as a salon wax. But it was my first time, so the next one will be better. I didn't pull my skin quite hard enough and there was a slight bruising.
It was a great success. A lot easier, and more effective, than sugaring. No mess, no need to shower afterwards to get off the residue of the sugar, no scraps of fabric to iron.
Don't forget to buy the adaptor if your bathroom hasn't got a shaver point.

Even managed my underarms!, 30 July 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
OK so I'm no stranger to epilating and have done my legs for years with my trusty, old epilator but tried my underarms once and hardly even got going it was so painful.
Decided it was time to invest in a new one and particularly wanted one for doing under my arms. So after reading 'hundreds' of reviews on here and elsewhere decided this was the model for me.
Put it on charge and had a browse through the instructions and looked at the various heads supplied. Have to say there's a head or cap suited to every part of your body you may wish to epilate!
Looked good so far! Fully charged I was ready, gave my legs a quick wipe with the included Pre-epilation wipes and proceeded.
Have to say not having to be next to a power point is a great bonus and the smartlight really shows up the little hairs that you'd otherwise miss. Another real plus point is the pivoting head which moves easily over the contours and knobbly bits - great for knees and ankles!
Doing my legs was a doddle, as I said I've done them before anyway but with this model it was quick, efficient and hardly felt a thing!
Deep breath, the moment I'd been waiting for and the reason I chose this model......underarms!
It hurt! Sorry but I can't lie, it really hurt - but I persevered, gritted my teeth and stuck with it (then treated myself to a large glass of wine afterwards which really helped!)
It's hard to get the skin under your arms really taut and I found bending my arm across the top of my head was the best I could do - I'm hoping that as reviews seem to say, it gets less painful each time and I will come back and update at a later date.
Thoroughly recommend this model, compared to my older model it's brilliant and does a much better job, much quicker and less painfully (yes even the underarms bit - at least I managed to do them with this one and hopefully it'll be better next time)
Only criticism is the two pin plug thing, Braun if you'd thrown in an adaptor it would have been perfect!
Update: Three weeks on and it's been great not having to shave under my arms every couple of days. I've just zapped the few fine hairs that had started to appear under my arms. It took a couple of minutes and hardly felt anything - certainly nothing like the painful first time. Can't recommend this epilator enough it's worth every penny!

Brilliant, 7 May 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xpressive 7681 Body & Face Rechargeable Epilator (Personal Care)
I have been thinking about using an eppilator for a while but I HATE pain, especially pain like waxing. I brought this braun eppilator after reading the positive reviews here on Amazon. It is amazing. It took me a good few minutes to get past the initial wincing to realise that it's not all that bad, its a bit like plucking your eyebrows, you get used to it over time. The light is very useful and I must admit as I do have sensitive and very dry skin it did look slightly irritated for a few of hours afterwards. I have done my legs so far and am plucking up the courage to eppilate elsewhere in the future. The results are well worth the money, just have some ice ready for your first time if you think you will need it!
