after finishing all my work and exams in my first year at uni, i decided to treat myself to a bit of retail therapy and wanted to get something other than a new outfit for a change...
after getting bored of shaving, i bought this product in boots yesterday having pondering the idea of an epilator for a few weeks, willing to leave my stubbly days behind.
when i got back to our flat, my purchase was met with interest and slight horror. surrounded by friends, we turned the epilator on, which was quite a shock in itself - it is quite lawnmower-esque!! having never even been for a wax, i was expecting pain and braced myself, but was then pleasantly surprised at my lack of screaming! no, it wasn't painless, but it was bearable and more like a short, sharp feeling. i proceeded to epilate the rest of my legs, and was left with little red spots everywhere. i'd been told to moisturise afterwards, which i did whilst admiring my handiwork.
when i woke up this morning, the spots had disappeared and i am left with smooth, hair-free legs with no stubble appearing overnight, and if it does what it says on the tin, it should hopefully stay like this for a month!
very very pleased with this, and i recommend it to all. if me, a waxing-virgin can do it without screaming, then so can you!

3.0 out of 5 stars I expected better, 4 Jun 2009

The product is OK and it kind of does the job.

It pulls out some of the hairs from the root but others it tends to snap them off always resulting 'not quite smooth' legs. it was a little disappointing but despite this; using the epilator for my underarms I found it worked really well so I'm going to keep using it.

The pain has eased since using it the first time but it certainly hasn't gone!! There are some areas more painful than others and I don't think the pain will ever completely go away. I do have a low pain threshold though (gutted).

I probably will go for a more expensive epilator next time.

Oh it is also loud as hell!! And also reeeeally frightening when you first turn it on .... it just seems like it goes too fast and that it's going to rip you to shreds ..... but of course, it doesn't.

1.0 out of 5 stars complete waste of money!, 20 Dec 2008

very disappointed with this epilator, bought it in order to have a better result than shaving, but it ended up pulling and snapping most of my hairs rather than removing them, meaning it was painful without the desired effect of having smooth legs! left me with itchy stubble and the added shaver head wouldn't cut hairs!! returned this for a refund, absolutely rubbish.
my mum used the same model herself and agreed it was useless. don't buy!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 8 Aug 2009

This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
I can't believe I've lived without this epilator for so long! Throughout the winter I wax my legs and always get in a predicament about what to do with them in summer, when my legs are on show too much to wait to have the hairs grow for a wax. I've always found that shaving them only lasts a day or two and it's such a hassle. This is the first epilator I've ever used, and expect it'll be the last.
It wasn't anywhere near as painful as I thought it'd be, infact it doesn't even compare to the pain of waxing. It has the convenience of shaving, but the effects of waxing. I just do it five minutes every morning and my legs are constantly smooth.
The only thing worth noting is that when put on the higher speed, it does tend to cut some hairs off rather than pull them out, but I've not had this problem on the slower speed. The lower speed, actually, is certainly good enough. All the hairs are pulled out, usually, in a single stroke, if not another stroke gets the strays. The light is very handy for this!
The only drawback is that it needs to be plugged in as it doesn't run on batteries, but it's worth the minor inconvenience, especially as it's a fairly long wire.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad product, 10 July 2010
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
This product causes alot of pain (which i obviously expected) but what i didn't expect is alot of pain and barely any hair removal. I have alot of fair hair and a few dark hairs so it removed a few darker hairs and left most of the fair ones. It snapped alot and im pretty sure i used it properly. Bad product all - together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Improvement on older models, 7 Jan 2010
By Reader, Southampton UK (Southampton, Hants United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
Bought to replace an older model which was so well used and worn that the speed settings had rubbed off; this is far quieter (defuzzing no longer sounds like jet plane taking off), thorough, with useful light for quick touch ups. All things Braun for this purpose seem better than other brands (don't buy Phillips - I did - binned it shortly afterwards). Amazon price good; can't recommend it highly enough as newer replacement model but I don't use the attachments. For those who use epilators and find a good one which suits, you never look back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Effective and not too painful, 18 July 2010
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought this as an alternative to waxing and shaving as I found them to be too time consuming, and the effects of shaving didn't last very long. I had never used an epilator before, but I was pretty pleased with the results. I won't lie and say it didn't hurt, but it was no big deal compared to waxing, and after the first use, the pain lessened considerably. The trimming attatchment is very handy for long hairs, so you dont have to shave and wait for the hair to grow back before using the epilator. The light is really good for seeing areas that you still need to go over. I found that sometimes not all hair was removed, and some fine hairs were left, but these were hardly noticable so didn't deter from the effectiveness of the epilator. I haven't used it anywhere other than my legs as the pain would be far too much on more sensitive areas, but all in all, it was a very good buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars useful tips, 18 July 2010
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
Let's recognise that the epilator is meant to pull the hair, not to shave it, but to pull the hair and ruin the hair bulb. So it hurts, but it is much better than waxing (cost you less, and does not pull away the skin, as waxing sometimes does) or shaving (longer lasting effect, thiner hair).
I would like to give a piece of advice for first time users of this epilator.
1) Do not try to use the epilator if your hair is longer than 1.5-2 mm. If it is, first shave the hair than wait for a couple of days and only then use the epilator. It does not furt that much on a shorter hair.
2) Underarms and the bikini line: if you have always shaved these places, then I would first go for waxing in these places. Alternatively you may pull the hair with tweezers, do it gradually though, say for a week or two. Do not try to use the epilator if you still see that your hair grows by two or three from one bulb, it will be painful. After a while your hair will be thin enough to use the epilator. Do it on a hair of the lenght 1.5 mm. and do it slowly, say 1 sq cm per day. It will be painful. However there is a good news: every time you pull the hair in these areas, the hair bulb is ruined, therefore next hair growing is much thinner and weaker.

Don't be lazy to use the epilator every week. Later on it will take you about 15 minutes for all the places and will save you a lot of money and time.

Overall this is a wonderful thing, I have bought it for my mom and sister, and taught them to use it and enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Painful at first but quick and easy, 9 July 2010
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
I was a little bit cautious when it came to epilating, but I have to admit it was no way as painful as what I thought it was going to be. Simpy purchase Veet's epilating spray leave it on for 5 minutes and you hardly feel a thing.

The results were fantastic and I am still hair free 5 weeks later. Go on girls by this and make your holiday preperation so much easier!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Silk-epil Elle, 24 Jun 2010
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5270 Epilator (Personal Care)
I am very happy with Braun Epilator. I was surprised at how little it hurt and also it didn't leave my legs looking blotchy. The little integrated light is inspired, showing up any hairs missed. I would not hesitate in recommending this product.
