This one's the least painful yet
Epilators have got LOADS better in the last few years, so if you've tried them before, there's always the possibility that you are missing out on some brilliant technological changes. Most importantly they get less painful. Braun have made all kinds of changes to the tweezing mechanism, but also in this epilator there's a flexible cap thingy which does the most amazing...

Braun silk-epil
The product was kind of ok but wasn't as stated which was a bit disappointing.
It came without the shaver head which is not a great loss but what was very misleading is that the product was described as rechargable.
I had hoped to be able to use it anywhere in the house (or garden) but instead, I have to use it in the bathroom as it only comes with a shaver...

This one's the least painful yet, 24 Oct 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
Epilators have got LOADS better in the last few years, so if you've tried them before, there's always the possibility that you are missing out on some brilliant technological changes. Most importantly they get less painful. Braun have made all kinds of changes to the tweezing mechanism, but also in this epilator there's a flexible cap thingy which does the most amazing job of lifting the hairs away from the skin so that you get a much "cleaner" finish first time round. So no painful going back over the same spot.
I have now had three different epilators. I had an existing Silk Epil I bought about four years ago and was very happy with it, wouldn't have replaced it except that a bit got lost so I thought I'd see about a new one. MY GOD! It's SO much better even in that amount of time. So if your epilator is more than five years old, think about replacing it even if it still works! Honestly this 5170 is LOADS more efficient than the old one and takes much less time and is much less painful. Smooth and not even that agonising. Worth every penny.
The innovations such as the light etc are useful. The only thing I will keep my old epilator for, is that it had a razor head that trimmed the hair to the least painful length - very short but just above the skin.

4 1/2 stars, 4 July 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought this product after threatening to buy one for months, at first i was a little nervous of how much it would hurt as a virgin to epilating. iv waxed before and found i just ended up in a sticky mess still hairy!!
When i first used it it made a really bad screeching noise but i soon found out this was because the head wasnt on properly and when i pushed it on the noise went away. Iv found that it hurts way more if your hairs are too long however the pain is definatly worth it - i did my underarms nearly 2 weeks ago now and theres still no sign of hair, at first it did make my legs a little red but this went down very quickly and this seems to have reduced already, im currently plucknig up the courage to do my bikini line - even if it dies hurt then the long lasting smoothness must be worth it right?!
the light is good for seeing what your doing and the different heads also very convinient, its easy to clean with the provided brush (though i wish it was waterproof to rinse it aswell)
id only give it 4 1/2 stars rather than 5 because its quite loud and not being able to wash it is less hyginic and you cant turn on the light with out the tweezers - this just very small things that i think would have made it 5 star but it really is a very good product however if you have a low pain threshold i suggest staying away from epilators - mine is fairly high and it dosent bother me much.

Braun silk-epil, 9 Sep 2009

The product was kind of ok but wasn't as stated which was a bit disappointing.
It came without the shaver head which is not a great loss but what was very misleading is that the product was described as rechargable.
I had hoped to be able to use it anywhere in the house (or garden) but instead, I have to use it in the bathroom as it only comes with a shaver type plug - somewhat limiting
and it isn't rechargable.
I think I'd only buy this kind of product from a physical shop where I could examine the product more closely before purchasing in future.

I expected a better result, 22 May 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
Having made a research on most epilators, I chose this particular one because of its functions, minimum additional attachments and reviews. I liked the design and I agree that massaging rollers reduce pain, the Smartlight technology makes it easier to see small hairs, SoftLift tips lift flat lying hairs, HOWEVER most hairs are just cut but not removed at the root.

Easy and painless for legs, 17 Mar 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
the epilator is easy and simple to use - the light is very handy. The shape of the head is convenient too. I hand another version which is about £20 dearer as it has lots of different heads - waste of money imo, just get this one!

Saves a lot of time and mess, 9 Aug 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
I used epilator for the first time and purchased it after a friend's recommendation. It was very scary when used for first time but I get used to it quite fast. I am happy with this product as it saves me a lot of time and mess of waxing. Its quite good for removing hair from legs and arms but not recommended for underarms and bikni line as it could be painful. At least I couldnt gather the courage to use it on underarms. Its not rechargeable as mentioned and also needs a shaver adapter. Overall I am happy with the purchase. Beginners may also try 3170 model I guess as it has less tweezers. Also it does not have a shaving head so it can be used only for epilation. Other models of Braun do have shaver head as well.

Watch out for the 2 pin plug, 9 Nov 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
Really pleased with this product in general, only issue was that it came with a 2 pin plug, not 3 so you have to buy an adaptor to use it! Luckily my old cable from my last one fit the new model so I can use that instead.

Big disappointment, 3 Sep 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
I have owned a Braun Silk-épil Epilator years ago and was very happy with its performance which is why I opted for the Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 when my old one broke. Unfortunately, this model is a failure. It removes hairs very slowly, certainly not matching the efficiency one would expect from the 40 tweezers that it features. Most importantly, the epilation head is attached very loosely to the body and keeps falling off while the epilator is in action, which is not only annoying, but also outright dangerous. Very disappointed.

Good Buy, 17 Aug 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
I had been waxing for 8 years and thought I would try an epilator as my friend said how good they were. I decided on the Braun as it said it was rechargeable (IT'S NOT!) and seemed to be a fair price. As I was used to waxing I didn't think there was too much of an "ouch" factor, the results are good but you need to do at least every 2 weeks, it's quick and easy which is also a great advantage. Disappointing that it's not rechargeable but the product works well. Amazon say included in the box is an adaptor but there wasn't one in mine. Overall 7/10 and would recommend. Forgot to mention that it is quite noisy too!!!

NOT rechargeable!!, 10 Aug 2009
This review is from: Braun Silk-épil Xelle 5170 Epilator (Personal Care)
I was disappointed to find that it isn't rechargeable, but that is Amazon's mistake, not a fault with the product. Even though I called them and told them, they didn't change it. They gave me a 10% 'good will' refund.
However, I like this epilator because it does a great job and would recommend it highly. First time use did involve some 'ouch factor' but it does improve with each use.
