5.0 out of 5 stars Totally squirrel proof!!
If I could give this 10 stars I would! You hang this feeder from a tree branch or bird table: it needs to be a certain distance from the ground and from other surfaces (to prevent the squirrel from jumping up or across to it). The metal sleeve slides down over the feeder when the squirrel tries to come down from above it to feed (which is why the feeder has to be...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not good enough for South London Squirrels
This is a clever product and I bought 4 of them. As other reviewers stated, they do let the rain in and the seed gets wet BUT the worst thing is that a determined squirrel (is there any other kind?) can grab hold of the bird perch and let the steel cover slide up again. I abandoned them all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally squirrel proof!!, 21 May 2008

If I could give this 10 stars I would! You hang this feeder from a tree branch or bird table: it needs to be a certain distance from the ground and from other surfaces (to prevent the squirrel from jumping up or across to it). The metal sleeve slides down over the feeder when the squirrel tries to come down from above it to feed (which is why the feeder has to be positioned right). Hard to describe on paper, but it works superbly in practice. Follow the instructions that come with this and you will never be bothered by squirrels again - guaranteed. The best squirrel proof feeder I've ever tried, and I've had it for many months now. No squirrel has managed to defeat it and the birds love it. The peanut version is just as good as well.

LATER ADDITION TO REVIEW: It is now February 2010 and STILL no squirrel has managed to break into these feeders! I have 6 of them (feeders, not squirrels...Squirrels don't bother coming into the garden much anymore because there's no FOOD for them). But you do have to make sure the feeders are positioned properly and I have noticed that in wet and stormy weather they can get wet inside. But I wouldn't use any other feeder now :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good and potentially waterproof, 6 Dec 2009
This review is from: Stainless Steel Squirrel Proof Wild Bird Seed Feeder
Have only ever once (in 5 years) seen a squirrel trying to get into this - hanging down by his back legs to reach past the sliding cover and get to the feed hole - he left with a tap on the window (we are out in the country so have other ways of staving off squirrel attacks, but not suited to built up areas). To avoid water running down the wire through the cover to wet the seed, slide a piece of kitchen foil through the loop just above where the central column joins the suspension wire and shape it to the top of the sliding cover - 100% fix. There are web sites explaining how to make home-made versions of this with plastic bottles (good instructive occupation for children with parent), but squirrels will gnaw at plastic, so this metal-sleeved product is pretty good and has served very well for 5 years now. Must be suspended well away from any adjacent perch points for a squirel to reach across to the feed hole and the bird perches must be at least 1.2 or even 1.5 metres above ground to avoid squirrels jumping up. Not 5 star as (a) needs self-mod for keeping dry, (b) positioning limitations and (c) risk that it could succumb to really persistent and constant squirrel attack hanging from above by back legs.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lets in the rain and seeds get wet, 12 Aug 2008
By Reviewer (London, England) - See all my reviews

This may keep the squirrels off but it does not keep the rain off.
It seems that the water is either running down the suspension wire directly into the seed holder or down the narrow tube at the very top, either way it is ok in a light shower but in the rain the water gets in, makes the seeds wet and they clump together. So I have to throw away the seeds after a downpour. But is fine in the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars They're pretty crafty!, 7 April 2010
By Maxie (Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stainless Steel Squirrel Proof Wild Bird Seed Feeder
Does what it says on the tin. Now I need to know how to keep them out of my tray - bigger birds don't seem to manage the seed feeder so have to put food in tray for them - the squirrels sit in it & frighten all the birds - I've become quite neurotic. They ignore me no matter what I do - as am in 81st year, I don't have a great turn of speed!
Only complaint is I have a bit of difficulty putting full tube into the metal collar.
Thank you.
First of all the squirrels jumped up & clung to perch (No other place I can hang it.)Shortened the string & then was vastly entertained watching them try to figure out another way in to seed making prodigious leaps on to plastic sleeve - they tried often enough before giving up.
I am, however, having to buy another one as the part with the food in it fell to the ground & disappeared - think the wee so & sos have run off with it & it can't be found!
Still haven't found a way to keep them out of tray for use of bigger birds??
Perhaps I should get a life!

I GIVE UP: Squirrels2, me nil! They have managed to loosen part with food again & have run off with it.
Does anyone know what they will have done with them?
Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy a new one; the latest one I had for less than a week.

5.0 out of 5 stars SQUIRREL PROOF AT LAST!, 16 Feb 2010
This review is from: Stainless Steel Squirrel Proof Wild Bird Seed Feeder
Much as i love sqirrels, they were destroying every seed feeder i was putting out for the birds. This product is the perfect answer to the problem,a bit fiddly but ingeneous!(although its probably only fiddly to me as i am naturally cack handed!).
I recommend this to anyone with over enthusiastic squirrels, the ones near me have to make do with the peanuts now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 14 Jan 2010
By MJ (London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stainless Steel Squirrel Proof Wild Bird Seed Feeder
It's extremely satisfying to watch this bird feeder in action. The birds love it, and the squirrels have tried many times to get the seeds, but can't. They've tried hauling it up - can't because of the plastic tube. Leaping onto it - nowhere to hang on to. Shaking the branch - a few seeds fall out, but not enough. Nibbling through the wire doesn't work either - it's too tough. After a few days they've completely given up on it and just sulk underneath it, waiting for the birds to let a few seeds fall. And we've hung a fat ball from the bottom too, to add insult to injury.

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT ENTIRELY SQUIRREL PROOF BUT GOOD FUN, 26 Jun 2010
By T W "Terry" (Leighton Buzzard, Beds England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stainless Steel Squirrel Proof Wild Bird Seed Feeder
I have been battling for years to find a squirrel proof way of feeding the birds. This seemed to be the answer. The squirrels looked on it as a challenge. After sliding down the wire and the sheath they realised that each time they released seeds to the ground beneath. So that encouraged them until eventually one worked it out and caught hold of the bird lander on the way down and waited until the sheath went back up. The result, an empty feeder in a few hours! I am trying again elsewhere. Worth it for the fun alone!
