great, and powerful - but perhaps not true alternative to petrol
Our lawn is more like field grass, than garden grass. We're moving somewhere more sensible and bought the Rotak with that in mind. Considering it was an overdue first cut of the year, I have to say the Rotak coped very well. It was however a fair slog to shove through some of the thicker clumps, with battery life suffering when being overworked. Life should be easier...

Grassbox Issue
I have given this mower 3 Stars because I am giving it the benefit of the
doubt on its grass-cutting performance, which I have not yet been able to
assess because I am still trying to assemble the grassbox!
This thing comes in three sections which have to be clipped together.
So far I have assembled two of the bits but after several hours the third...

Our lawn is more like field grass, than garden grass. We're moving somewhere more sensible and bought the Rotak with that in mind. Considering it was an overdue first cut of the year, I have to say the Rotak coped very well. It was however a fair slog to shove through some of the thicker clumps, with battery life suffering when being overworked. Life should be easier now post first-cut, and cordless operation is a joy, but I would still have gone with self-propelled petrol if i was going to have to hack through this in the long term. For any sensible medium sized lawn, the Rotak would be very good, and I suspect its more robust than its slightly flimsy plastic (but lightwieght) construction suggests. I guess its a sign of getting old when you start reviewing lawnmowers...

I bought this mower as I am waiting for my petrol mower to be fixed, and thought that it would be handy to have something ever so slightly more reliable than my 20 year old Hayter, which breaks spectacularly every spring without fail. And what a world of difference. I think I will actually sell the petrol mower, as I now have no use for it.
I braced myself for a difficult assembly after reading previous comments, but it was simple, the instructions were clear enough, and it only took about 15 minutes. I popped the battery into the big manly charger at the same time, and took it out for a test on the lawn, even though it was very wet. It cut the wet grass with ease, the stripes were defined and wide (it has a small roller), it is light and easy to push and the blade adjusts with ease. Four things are particularly brilliant, however:
1) It comes with two batteries, which I didn't really appreciate, so one can mow continuously (unless you have a very rough lawn which will use the battery up faster than it can be charged).
2) It has a cool comb thingy which cuts right to the edge of the grass. It really works.
3) Its pretty quiet, so you can cut in less sociable hours.
4) It probably won't break or need servicing routinely. This should save one a lot of money.
Disadvantages? It can't get through really tough grass as well as a petrol, you would need to mow it from a height first then again at a lower one. I suppose you don't look as masculine as a petrol mower user. It also feels a bit 'light' and platicy. But I think it will actually wear quite well, its quite well constructed despite the materials used. Hopefully it should last quite a while.
All in all a product which is hard to fault.

Bosch Rotak 43 Lithium Ion - Cordless Lawnmower
Purchased this machine to be cable free & with a view to my partner being able to use, we were reluctant to purchase petrol as these can be a bit tricky to get started occasionally.
Anyway we have been delighted with this machine, battery life is good even when the grass is left to be longer than ideal. It is very easy to use & it is fantastic to just walk out the garage pull the lever & cut without having to top up with fuel or run out miles of cable. The quality of cut is great & the stripes are the longest lasting I have ever encountered with any mower, although this may be due to the lawn grass. All in all I would recommend this mower to anyone. The only point I can't comment on to date is battery life but Bosch say we should get up to 1,000 charges which at 30-40 cuts/year is more than enough for anyone.

I originally purchased this mower in March 2009. I was perfectly happy with the quality of my old mower (Hayter) but NOT the tangle of mains lead and mains extension leads that came with it. However I was very disappointed initially with the performance of the BOSCH Rotak 43LI cordless when I first tried it! The depth of cut, even on the lowest setting did not match my old Hayter. After much disappointment I resigned myself to selling it on e-bay. From April it has remained in my garage with me feeling pretty disappointed at its performance. Today I decided to give it one more chance to redeem itself! I searched the internet for various customer reviews whereupon I stumbled across one review which said "to achieve a finer cut remove the plastic blanking plate."
I am usually very good at reading instructions that come with products and must have read the instructions for the Rotak 43LI from cover to cover! However obviously not! Therefore all potential users of this mower take note. To achieve a finer cut - (from 35mm to 20mm) REMOVE THE BLANKING PLATE!
This advice is clearly shown in the instruction manual with a triangle (hazard safety alert) - "The lawnmower may be used to cut down to 20mm by removing the blanking plate 25 as shown" This is easily removed with a screw-driver.
Once I had done this I was able to achieve the results I had previously achieved with my previous lawnmower. As a consequence I am so relieved that I decided to look at other customer reviews before deciding to sell it at a ridiculous low price just to get rid of it..
To summarise.... this product is FAB. The time I spend cutting my grass has easily been reduced by 50%, if not more. Take my advice however and purchase the bigger 43LI model. You will need two batteries for a moderate size garden and as previously advised by other reviews on this product the cost of buying a second battery is over £100. Finally remember to remove the blanking plate if you want a shorter cut...thanks for reading this!

The Flymo/mains cable/extension lead thing used to do my head in on a weekend. It was a real chore and the whole process took a couple of hours start to finish. I can now complete the same job to a much higher standard in less than half the time. This thing is the business. Yes, it's expensive but then the competition in terms of performance is really a good petrol mower, not an electric one. We have a steep garden with a lot of steps, so liftability was important (third the weight of a petrol mower). The assembly was easy, the maintenance & general hassle factor is minimal compared to the mains cable mowers or the petrol ones. I'm glad I got the two batteries version (43 not 37) as otherwise that would have been a pain. Yes, overall very happy with it - highly recommended...

A previous comment stated the grass box was awkward to assemble, you do need to ensure that the tabs are correctly aligned prior to flexing/clicking the parts together. This does take a little strength and patience, some people may find it more challenging, especially with concerns about breaking the box. The plastic box however is fairly strong, albeit flexible. Other than this the assembly phase is very simple with just the handle to screw into the body of the mower.
BATTERY CHARGE & USE

The batteries charge in approx. one hour as per instructions and the mower is ready to go. My lawn is approx. 150 sq.mtr with an awkward shape and required only the top few cms to be trimmed on it's first cut. The quality of the cut was excellent with neat stripes left across the lawn, leaving a bowling green finish ( I wish...). After the cut, the battery power remaining showed greater than 1/3. I have since cut the grass when wet with several inches removed and a single battery charge was sufficient to complete the task. The second battery can be kept in reserve for more challenging times.
SUMMARY
---------------
This is a great cordless mower which enables very easy cutting of small/medium grass areas, in particular awkward shapes where a conventional electric mower has the user continually flicking the mains lead out of the way. I like the light weight which makes it easy to push and not having to worry about an electric lead or the difficulty of starting a petrol engine mower. It is a shame that the battery indicator is not active whilst mowing as this would provide real time feedback as to how much lawn can still be cut on that charge. To see the remaining charge you have to press a button and look carefully at the LEDs (impossible in bright light). I would give the mower 4/5 overall based on value for money and quality, but 5/5 for grass cutting quality and ease of use.

Well thought out design that really works, 8 Jun 2008

I purchased this mower to replace an old electric mower which was on its last legs. I wanted a cable free design and opted for this model rather than a petrol one as I have a small front garden and a small come medium rear garden.
When it arrived all I had to do was put the grass box together which snaps together with plastic clips. You do the side sections first then the top. No issues about putting the sections together which took me all of 5 minutes to do, following the instructions in the manual.
Next I fitted the handle assembly, nice and easy again following the clear instructions provided in the manual.
The battery charger simply plugs in and I put the first battery onto it and it took roughly 3/4 of an hour the fully charge then I heard a beep from the charger letting me know it was at max. Each battery has a little push in switch and 3 lights to let you know the charge held within the battery. I then placed the other battery into the charger and charged it up.
The mower has a lovely sharp metal blade and has a nice size chute at the rear for the cut grass to fly through into the grass box. I would agree to a point that due to the mower being constructed from plastic it has that kind of flimsy feel but no more than many other makes out there.
I was happy with how light it weighs and it has a nice handle to lift it by which also seems to be placed just right for the balance whilst lifting and carrying the mower.
I also found the height adjuster handle easy to move. There's even a roller at the rear to aid I guess lines.
My rear lawn was a little over grown and the grass was long and damp so I thought this would be the first real test for it.
All I had to do was fit the grass box, adjust height to max and push in the battery followed by pushing in the isolator key. I then pushed in the side handle button and held up the front handle bar and away she went. The first pass over the lawn collected the grass cuttings well and so I then dropped the height down to mid way and again ran over the lawn. Once more it handled this very well and soon I was done. Then I lowered it to one above min for the final cut and again I soon had it cut.
I then lifted it to the front lawn and decided I would keep it at the low setting to see what it would handle it like. Again the grass is long and damp. No problem for it and it soon made short work of the front all be it the last 5 foot square where the mower suddenly ran slow. I removed the isolator key and removed the battery and by a quick push on the battery condition button showed it was drained so in went the other battery and away I went again to finish the lawn.
Cleaned the mower and recharged both batteries for next time and job done.
It was great not having any cables and I was impressed with the power the machine has which never showed any sign of slowing down when going through the grass.
Good points.
Light, easy to carry and push. Large 50ltr collection box. Great battery performance. 2 batteries which always comes in useful. Collects all the grass cuttings and leaves none.
Bad points.
Cost. Its not cheap but worth every penny due to no cables.

The assembly isn't anywhere near as difficult as made out by other reviews. I read the instructions and put it together within 30 mins.
Mowing has never been easier. One battery does the job for our 300 square metre lawn. I don't have to bother with the double extension cable and the kids toys strewn across the grass don't get tangled in the trailing power cable. The 50L grassbox is bigger than most models too making emptying less frequent.
Overall, its mowing made easy and safe too without flammable petrol or electric cables.

I was about to buy a petrol mower for a new, fairly large (c.550 square metre) and very overgrown lawn when I read reviews for this. Glad I did. To my amazement, it has coped brilliant with seriously long grass, even when quite wet. Sure, each battery only did about 125 sq m on the first cut, but given the state the lawn was in, I think that's pretty good.
I can't judge yet what its longevity will be like, but so far, I couldn't be more impressed, and given Bosch's superb power tools, I'm hopeful. I had been a bit worried by the review that complains about the grass box, but in fact had no trouble at all assembling it, and while it's light and plastic, I suspect it will be sturdy enough for its function.

Bought 43LiIon in April 2009 and still pleased 4 months on. Fully agree with all plus points in other reviews, but there are some issues to take into account.
1. Cheapest supplier was no-one on net but local Bosch specialist - I paid £299, brand new, original packaging and 2 batteries.
2. Grass box gets in way of your feet going downhill, if you have to cut up and down on steep lawn. No problem on second lawn which is wide enough to cut across.
3. Handles cannot be lowered to ground level to cut under fruit trees - which is possible with my (heavy) two stroke Flymo.
4. 43cms may be wide for electric mower but still narrower than many petrol and two stroke mowers, so cutting time increases.
5. Echo other comments about flimsy look and feel, especially grass box, but hopefully will stand the longevity test.
Overall: portability, cable-free, quality of cut, grass collection and general ease of use all mean it earns 5 stars.
