...beyond nutters..., 31 Aug 2007
We don't have enough nutters in metal. Sure, there are legions of "och, looky here, I can drink / snort / shag / masticate all night long" bores and boors, but we're lacking in proper loonies. And then there is Sigh.
Black metal, thrash metal, jazz rock, psychedelia - they've done it all, often on the same song. With saxophone. And monks habits. Now, on album number seven, accordin gto vocalist / keyboard player / loony in chief Mirai Kawashima, they're going for thrash metal meets German symphony.
Still with saxophone.
And it really is a remarkable sound as they lash out with a visceral rage across the three acts of the "Hangman's Hymn". Undoubtedly one of the metal albums of the year, this shows a breadth of ambition and ideas that leave most of the identikit metal bands out there, spitting out dust in their wake.
There are no prisoners takem as they pummel their way through outstanding moment sof metal madness like 'Me-Devil' and the whole of Act III, a suite you all need to have tattooed on your brain.
