3.0 out of 5 stars DC20 better than an old DC05 ?
I recently purchased a `DC20 Animal' to replace our 8 year old DC05. In latter years the DC05 had started to become expensive to maintain, having to replace the extendable tube and turbine head a few times.

In the DC20, Dyson have made the extendable tube construction much more robust, and improved the tube latches (the weakest part in my experience)...

I had heard people rave about Dysons and could never bring myself to cough up such a large amount for a Vacuum cleaner. 2 £50 cheapo cleaners later, a sea of dog hair having rendered them useless, I took the plunge. W-O-W!

We borrowed a friends while we waited for it to arrive and managed to suck up 4 - yes 4 - containers full of pet hair and dirt in the first use. Our DC20 then arrived, and eager to set to, I was off! Just vacuuming (or should that become Dysoning? - after all hoovering is now parlance) 4 of our 8 rooms in the flat picked up another container full of hair - 3 days after our 4 container mega clean! This vacuum is simply brilliant.

The compact design and easy to manoeuvre wheels, combined with the hose and turbine head make vacuuming a doddle. The turbine head just thrashes dust, pet hair and other detritus out of the carpet, leaving it cleaner than I have ever seen it. The hard floor tool made short work of the kitchen and I am now itching to try the skinny nozzle and mini-turbine head in the tighter to reach areas.

In short, if you were reluctant to shell out for a Dyson and you have a pet, the animal range is a must. We borrowed a DC11 (I think) and purchased a DC20 - you will not regret it. Vacuuming is almost a fun activity now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it, 21 Jun 2007

Pro's:
Lighter, quieter than other models, easier to use, easier to dismantle and untangle the brush heads. Interchangeable heads. Resistant to blocking.

Cons:
Small dust chamber, expensive, still not quiet enough for unrestricted professional use (more than 80 dBA exposure for operator & others in room)

This must be among the most expensive vacuum cleaners on the domestic market, but as they say you do get what you pay for.

We bought one as a replacement for an old DCO4 which was bought just before the HEPA filters were released on the market.

It's noticeably quieter than many of the upright Dyson machines, and the user is significantly further away from the noise source however if you're using one professionally you should still use ear defenders! Many Vacuum cleaners are well above the dangerous noise level limits.

It comes with Two brush heads. The smaller one, being more compact is super powerful! The larger one is still excellent at cleaning large carpeted floors.

It's much lighter and easier to use than an upright.

The brush head attachment is easily dismantle-able to clean, and as human hairs get wrapped around the bar very quickly this ease of cleaning is a huge improvement over our old DC04

As with all Dysons it's bagless with permanent filters, which greatly reduces running costs.

On the down side, the dust capacity is rather small requiring changing every time it's used, or in between rooms if you're doing a lot of cleaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 25 Sep 2007

I inherited 3 cats recently and was due to replace my vacuum, so I went to the Dyson Website to choose which model and found it cheaper and next day delivery on Amazon. It arrived by 12:00 the next day and it is brilliant. The hard floor head is great for lino & laminate and the turbo heads are brilliant. Anyone who has a cat will know how the hairs seem to 'weave' themselves into fabrics (duvet etc) well the mini turbo head eliminates them! I have never seen such good cleaning from a vacuum and the design is easy to use and empty. In particular the handle extends and rotates so that you can easily hoover under a bed without the turbo head lifting off the floor. Fantastic product - well worth the outlay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy Dyson and never look back!!!, 3 Dec 2007
This review is from: Dyson DC20 Stowaway Animal Cylinder Vacuum cleaner (Kitchen & Home)
I bought this hoover after seeing 5 star reviews on Amazon and an advert on tv. My attitude was, if it didn't do it's job I would return it to the store. Fortunately it didn't come to that. After putting it together and getting to know where everything is and fits I started hoovering and a big WOW came to my head. I was impressed with the performance of the Turbine brush which picks dog and cat hairs easily. I have 1 black labrador and 2 Persian cats and this hoover tackles the hair, no problem.
Having an Electrolux hoover before, which was useless on pet hair, I had to go over the carpet with a damp cloth to pick the leftover hair. Putting Dyson to test I did the same thing after hoovering and BINGO the cloth didn't find any hairs.
I am well impressed with this hoover and with 5 year guarantee my mind is at ease.
Hoovering is very enjoyable task now.
A lot of people are saying that the dust container is on a small side. I don't have a problem with that, it hardly gets full after hoovering. But even then I don't mind throwing away the debris. It doesn't take long to do that and at least I know the suction will stay at it's best when the container is empty.
I can't wait to hoover each time.

5.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for..., 3 Feb 2008

We took a deep breath before shelling out for the Dyson DC 20. After all, there aren't many makes that make Miele seem cheap! We've had a Dyson upright for a number of years and it has always given good service but was unable to cope with the hairs generated by our chocolate labrador. With the addition of a new black lab puppy, action was needed to avoid us sinking into a mass of dog hair. I hate going to work looking like I've lent my suit to the dog!

The Dyson feels solid and durable. It clips together easily, even though the instructions don't have any words and the pictures sometimes need a little working out. It's also more compact than I expected. When you start vacuuming, a clear strip appears across the carpet, almost like the effect of a paint roller. Hairs were gone...completely! With the various tools supplied it's easy to get right to the edge of the floor, along skirtings and stairs. Other people have said that the dust capacity is small and that it needs to be emptied frequently and while that's true, it's partly because the suction is so powerful it collects a lot of muck.

So in summary, if you want dog hairs cleaned up, buy this. Just don't look at the price!

Just received this dyson and it is clearly the best hoover we have ever owned. We thought our house was clean but this animal must drag dust from under the carpets as well as from on top,the amount of dust and pet hairs our old hoover didnt pick up is unbelievable. It is a very good hoover and i wished we had bought this dyson,2 hoovers back and saved a lot of messing about and frustration. My sister owns a dyson and she said hers was great, she was right, top technology, yes top prices but the discount amazon has given us is first class.Amazon delivered this dyson on saturday morning,i ordered it on friday afternoon, brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars DC20 Stowaway animal, 1 Jun 2008

I have just replaced my old dyson DC14 Animal upright, with this hoover, and I am very peased. I have 2 long haired german shepherds, and this hoover picks up the hair really well, its a little lighter than the old one, and its easier to use. Very quiet and stows away neatly which is grwt. The only thing I miss from the old one it the teloscopic wand, this new hoover doesn't reach the top of my stairs and won't sit on the steps so I have to hoover 1 half from upstairs and 1 half from down. Would still recommend it though.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!, 12 Mar 2008

We had an old DC07 that was on its last legs so we decided it was time to get a replacement. We knew it would have to be a Dyson again, after all, once you've had one, you can't go back...
We did a little research to decide which model would be better for us and decided to go for a stowaway type. Best decision ever!
The "animal" is fantastic! Very compact, easy to use, assemble and disassemble. It fits perfectly in our airing cupboard so we can finally have it put away properly since we couldn't do it with the other one.
The DC20 is also a lot quieter than our DC07. I can't think of anything bad to say about it!
I know it is a lot of money for a vacuum cleaner but I know it's going to last me a long time - we had the DC07 for 6 years!
Every little speck of dust is now an excuse to get my new Dyson out! How sad?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!! Design + functionality....couldn't be better!, 19 April 2008
This review is from: Dyson DC20 Stowaway Animal Cylinder Vacuum cleaner (Kitchen & Home)
Just received our brand new DC20 Animal, and we couldn't stop using it.
Our flat never felt or looked this clean. We've been using a Henry for the past 4 years, and clearly it wasn't enough for our flat + cat.
In the first few passes the Dyson just extracted everything in its path, and the carpet was left like brand new. We emptied the tank 3 times in the afternoon. The accessories are really well designed and the quality of the materials is first class. It looks fantastic and does the job better than expected. We're thrilled with the little Animal!

Due to having a new house (the 3 floor type they build now, cheers!), 3 messy children and 2 little dogs, one of which is white and moults terribly, I decided enough was enough, I needed help. After having upright cleaners in the past I decided to take the plunge and buy a Dyson DC20 Stowaway Animal Cylinder cleaner - BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE. Extremely strong suction, dog hairs gone (even the dog nearly went up it), very easy to use. It comes with an attachment for pet hair but I found the normal attachment was enough to suck the hair up anyway. Stairs are a doddle. The normal carpet attachment fits great on each stair and plenty of cable to reach the top. You can also vacuum under beds really easy as the end twizzles so you can lay it flat. There is a hard floor attachment which is great for laminate and tiles (although, again I just used the normal carpet attachment and it did the job perfectly). I vacuumed my whole house, 3 floors, 5 bedrooms and it looks fantastic! If you have pets, particularly if they moult you have to get this vacuum cleaner. You will not be disappointed. If I had to have one negative to say is that you just have to watch your paintwork as if you are not careful when you are pulling it around you could bang the skirting boards and mark them (but just be careful!)
