Wish I'd bought one years ago!
For anyone hesitating over whether to buy an epilator, I would say go for it! I've had salon waxes a few times before, but never done it regularly because of the cost. Home waxing is just too messy and not particularly efficient or long lasting and depilating creams are pretty rubbish, so I have always stuck to shaving, but the disadvantage with that is how frequently...

Needs frequent use
If you're like me and needed to shave every other day then you'll probably need to use this that often too.
I was disappointed that even though my hairs grow back a bit finer I still have to epilate as much as I shaved with a razor. The product leaflet indicated that I might only have to shave monthly but several months on I've noticed no difference.

Wish I'd bought one years ago!, 1 May 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
For anyone hesitating over whether to buy an epilator, I would say go for it! I've had salon waxes a few times before, but never done it regularly because of the cost. Home waxing is just too messy and not particularly efficient or long lasting and depilating creams are pretty rubbish, so I have always stuck to shaving, but the disadvantage with that is how frequently you have to do it, plus stubbly regrowth. I'd never really thought of epilating before, but after reading a few reviews on here, I decided to take the plunge. I am so pleased with the results! My legs and underarms are now perfectly smooth and it's easy to do at home. The sensation was a bit strange to get used to at first - I felt like I was shearing a sheep and the buzzing noise is a bit disconcerting! But it wasn't really very painful, just like a hot tingling sensation. My skin came up in red pimples in a few places, but these had gone by the following morning. Bikini line was more painful than doing my legs, but still bearable.
Good things about this model - it's very efficient and worked well on fine and coarse, short and long hair. I like the massage rollers and the choice of epilating heads. The spotlight is brilliant for showing up little tiny hairs. I went for this model because I had never epilated before and was not a regular waxer, so I wanted the easy start set, which is basically a gel pad you put in the freezer, with a glove thing it goes in, which you can use to numb your skin before you epilate, plus an epilating head with fewer tweezers which you can use before progressing to the regular head. However, I found the whole process so much less painful than I had thought that I didn't really need the easy start set. For me that was a bit of a waste of money, and I wish I had gone for slightly different model in the same range that comes with a trimmer or shaver rather than the easy start set. But overall I am hugely pleased with the ease and results of this product, and would definitely encourage any epilating virgins to go for it!

Converted to epilating!, 29 May 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
I rarely write reviews but had to let other people know how worthwhile it is investing in one of these! I've waxed my own bikini line before and had it done professionally - both hurt and home waxing is really messy. I was really dubious about buying an epilator but reviews on here convinced me so I thought I'd give it a go. I found epilating less painful as you can do small areas at a time. I didn't bother with the ice pack and after trying the starter head and realising it was okay, went straight on to the other one so I could get more hairs out at once!
I have also used it on my legs and it's so nice not to have to shave them everyday. I've also used it under my arms, which I found the most painful area - that said, the second time wasn't so bad and the best thing is you don't get dark shadows anymore and it lasts longer than shaving!
If you're not sure, I would give it a go as it's a brilliant investment (so much cheaper than waxing in the long term - by the way, they are 39.99 in Boots at the mo!)

"Gentle hair removal" - not quite!, 3 Jun 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
I bought this product after being fed up of shaving my legs and the hair growing back within days! I wanted smooth legs for the summer, but i'm not keen on waxing. I'd been thinking about buying one of these gadgets for a while and a friend who has one, said how good it was so decided to invest. The first time I tried this, it was so painful - I managed about 2 thirds of my lower leg and decided it was too much! So I finished the job with a razor! I thought maybe the hairs on my legs were a little long for epilating, so decided to leave it a while until the shaved hair grew back a bit! I tried it again about a week later, and it was just as painful as the first time! So, the initial use of this gadget is quite painful...infact I will not lie...it is torture, but after a few attempts you get used to the pain and the less hairs there are to pluck, then less painful it becomes - you just need to keep on top of it! The most painful areas are the ankles and the knees - I wouldn't even attempt to epilate my bikini line or underarms! I did get a bit of an irritation afterwards but that soon disappears. My best advice would be not to bother with the starter head - go straight for the professional head and have it on full speed...plucking more hair at a higher speed = less torture! I found the spotlight and the cooling mit very useful. On the whole, I have given this product 4 stars because even after enduring all the initial pain, the results are very good and I have smooth legs for weeks! Worth buying if you have a high pain threshold!

Giving Epilators another chance!, 1 Jun 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
I had tried an epilator years ago and after whimpering through the process on one leg simply couldn't go on.
Now, after 12 years, I found that I was sick of shaving every day in summer, professional waxing was expensive, home waxing was tedious, messy, and painful and I simply was at my wit's end.
I read the reviews for this model and decided to give it a go. I am so glad that I did!
Epilators have come a long way since I used one. This brand comes with a starter head for beginners to ease themselves into the sensation. There is also a cool pack which you can use to numb your skin beforehand.
I have found that the first few minutes are prickly and annoying, but once you relax and put the massaging heads in direct contact with the skin it's actually not that bad at all. More tingly than anything else.
My underarm area is the most sensitive. I still have a little trouble with the first few minutes of epilator contact in that region. However, it does get better every time as your skin adjusts to the epilator.
The smoothness of the skin afterwards is like a fresh wax. There are little red bumps of irritation for a few hours, but they quickly fade. You won't have to reach for a razor every single morning. It's really quite freeing!
If you can't decide whether or not to try this product out, I say go for it. To me it was a worthwhile investment.

Work through the pain!, 28 Oct 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
I was new to epilating and had never really bothered with waxing - never had a salon one and my experiments at home with wax/sugar just ended in mess and sticky goop and resorting back to a razor. I wasn't so bothered about my legs - my leg hair is almost transparent against my skin - but wanted it mainly for my bikini line.
The first time I tried it the buzz was alarming and it hurt like hell!! I did seriously wonder what I had bought BUT somehow it gets easier... I use it on my legs too now, it does a fab job and I don't notice the pain. It is still painful on sensitive areas - but that too is getting easier.
Top tips:
If it hurts too much sober, try it after a glass or two of wine... Get through that first stage it will be so much easier and you will succeed sober next time!
Make sure hair is fairly short (esp) bikini line cos it really pulls on the long ones
Get onto the full head and the high speed asap - it's no more painful and it's over quicker (but psychologically it took me a few goes to do this)
Stick at it cos it DOES get less painful honestly!
I have the lowest pain threshold ever and I can do it - give it a try it is mess and fuss free!

No pain no gain, 16 Aug 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
My housemate had been raving about her epilator for months so I bit the bullet and got one - shaving is a pain in the summer, especially when on holiday and having to do it every other day!
Yes, the first time hurts. No getting away from that. But now I've done it 3 times and now it just tickles more than it hurts... Don't bother with the starter head, it prolongs the agony. All things considered, 10 minutes of mild discomfort is worth it for a couple of weeks of not shaving! Haven't been brave enough to let it near my armpits or other sensitive bits yet though...
A couple of tips - do it before bed so the redness disappears overnight. Also I find aloe vera gel is soothing after use.

It's not that painful ! - Change of Mind, 22 Jan 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
Sorry this is like an essay !
I need to add actually to my big 5 star review of how easy & great the product is that now I have reverted back to shaving with a razor as it's far quicker and easier (I find the Venus ones very safe and easy).
About a week or so after using the eplilatorI had ingrown hairs which I had to prick out with a pin and tweezer manually and also the hair grew back just as normal in about a week - so four weeks was not true in my case unfortunately.
You can only use it in certain places because of the power cord and to do all your legs can take a long time and it's very noisey (I was worrying about my neighbours complaining!).
So if you have time & patience to do it all then fair enough but I gave up in the end. I also found it more painful when I tried using it again at a later date. I do still stand by quick and careful with breaks in between though to help ease the pain or get it over with.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
After reading some of these other reviews I wondered if I had done the right thing ordering an epilator (though all the reviews said anyone thinking about it should go for it - so I did). When it arrived I was actually scared stiff of the thing and what the pain would be like.
I freezed the pack one evening but really didn't use it much. I also followed the advice of another person on here and went straight for the main head and the fast speed - get it over and done with etc - I've never used an epilator before so it was a risky business jumping straight in but it worked. I did it gradually in small sections (strokes) with little stops imbetween.
Either I have a good pain threshold or it really wasn't that bad. However, I must admit on the tops of your legs it could be more painful (there is possibly lots of fine hair there you may not notice and so more to pluck) so I took that a bit more carefully. I did also go over my knees carefully. I've also had a quick little go with the edges of my bikini line and found it OK. Not adventerous enough yet though for the underarms.
Legs came up with very little red bumps just a bit like shaving badly really, bikini line came up with red bumps also but all faded shortly after.
I'm just waiting now to see how long it takes to grow back. The whole reason I wanted an epilator was that I was told your legs tan better on holiday, and last time after shaving with a razor when going on holiday my legs came out in a rash & spots so I hope that this time I go on holiday I should be OK. I was hoping the epilator would not cause a bad reaction on my legs but it did not, as said the little red marks faded away quickly and my legs look smooth, I did also moisturise as advised afterwards.
I've litterally run the epilator all over any areas of unwanted hair (over a day or so) and have got used to the sensation - it does have the good advantage that you can do bits in stages. Obviously when less hair is growing back any pain will be reduced. I must add that I did use mine on about a weeks growth of longish stubble which felt OK but the longer and more hairs on the tops of my legs were a little bit more painfull) so advised not to do it if your hair is really long it may pull harder.
If you are hesitating I would say go for it. Don't be scared of it, and really doing it quick but carefully is a good idea. If you do feel some pain bite a folded clean flannel or something and it's only a quick pain it soon fades.

great epilator, 11 Sep 2007
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
I have used epilators for my legs & bikini for years and this is the best that I have tried. The light is very useful in showing all those hairs which need doing and never before have I felt that I have managed to get my legs completely hair free however with this I do. This one also seems more gentle than most others I have tried. Would definately recommend buying

Worth it!, 2 Jun 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
It kills but it's worth it. I have a low pain threshold and have used this for my bikini line for approx 6 months and it is just as effective as a wax in a salon but you do it in the privacy of your own home. Legs take too long for me but underarms are easy and no problem if you use the safety rollers. Fabulous gadget!

Fantastic Product, 11 May 2008
This review is from: Braun Silk epil X'elle 5185 Epilator (Personal Care)
Very good bit of equipment. Since buying it I have used it regularly - money well spent. The first time I used it I found it immensely painful to use - not unlike holding a flame under my arms. However, I persevered and now there is little or no pain at all and the hair removal is very effective. Far better than shaving, far more cost effective than waxing, no sore skin like you can get with creams. Highly recommended. Dont't buy cheap, buy a decent machine like this one.
