Qualcast Elan 22 Electric Mower
We wanted a mower that was light weight, easily transportable and gave a clean cut. We find that the Elan is just right for our small garden and has made mowing much easier. Therefore we can recommend it.

Very poor mower., 25 Mar 2007
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
I bought this mower two years ago and it died after about 14 months use on a small-medium size garden. The power rating is quite low and therefore it often struggles if the grass is the slightest bit damp. Also the cylinder is driven by a belt from the motor. Part of this mechanism actually sheered off completely and it was at this point that I put it in the skip. The idea of getting a nice 'stripe' effect on the garden doesn't work either. I'd strongly recommend getting a more powerful mower as even on a small-medium size garden this one struggles and then dies.

Qualcast used to be reputable, 20 Aug 2007
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
I've had Qualcast mowers before, but am horrified at the quality and reliability of this model. It is terrible. I bought it in December 2006 and, being winter, never used it until spring. It is cheaply made, low grade plastic, most of the main components like the hadle hinges and the height adjuster are plastic. When I started to use it I thought, this will never last. I was right. Now, in July 2007 after 3 months use it's useless. It will not cut, and you cannot align the blades to cut properly. Too close to the basplate and it makes a terrible noise, open the gap and it does not cut. Worse thing though is that I find that Amazon will not take it back, even though it has a 12 month guarantee, and 5 years on parts. I'd like to see one of these pieces of junk lasting 2 years, let alone 5.

Not on new turf - no don't do it, 17 Jun 2008
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
This is a pathetic mower and tends to tear at the grass. If used on new turf it will rip it up.
It doesn't like long grass.
It doesn't like damp grass.
It doesn't produce stripes.
Does anyone know what the clip at the base of the handle is for? It just makes folding it up a pain.
I've persevered for a couple of years with this (don't ask me why) and am going to try a different brand. I thought Qualcast was supposed to be good - not any more?

Frustratingly weak, 29 Jun 2008
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
Bought this mower in 2005, and it is still gong 3 years on. That's not to say that I have ever been totally satisfied with it though. I have managed to get the stripes, which gives a pleasing effect afterwards, however the actual mowing experience is not good. it can't handle damp lawns, and long grass needs to be done twice. Rather than a clean cut, the grass is flayed at the tips, which was what I was trying to avoid in getting a cylinder mower. I'd avoid this one - it is far too weak and flimsy.

Don't buy it !, 4 May 2008
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
The only good thing if found is that it is easy to use but don't expect good performance: the grass box needs emptying constantly or else the cut grass spewed back out of the grass box. The rollers tend to flatten the grass and the cut is very uneven.
I bought it less than 18 months ago - used it only a few time and ... it is broken already: the motor ceased turning the blades !

Eclipse 320, 7 May 2008
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
This mower does not cut grass it flattens it. the motor is not man enought for the job either. the cross bar that actuates with the cylinder blades to cut the grass is too thick and just jams on the mud. save your self the £100 which is high too. Qualcast make great rotaries, have just bought a qualcast rotary excellent and 40% cheaper. Previously had a turbo vac which was excellent also.

Junk, 4 Oct 2008
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
This mower is total rubbish. It's cheap and shoddily made and not easy to make any height adjustments. Its motor is so gutless that it would be more suited to a ceiling fan and don't even think of cutting wet grass - it'll wilt like a daffodil at the thought. The very first time I used it, the pins holding the handle broke. Sure, the manufacturers agreed to replace them because of a 'manufacturing defect' but it took two weeks for them to arrive. By that time the grass was long enough to scythe down! I had a Black and Decker hover mower for twenty years before it died and I wish I had simply replaced it with another Black and Decker. In short, save your money or put it towards a sheep.

Worst lawnmower ever, 19 April 2009
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
The worst lawnmower I ever bought.
I researched the strengths and weaknesses of cylinder mowers compared with the far more common rotary style. I chose a cylinder because it is supposed to provide a superior cut, however this mower doesn't cut the grass well at all - it flattens it. Especially if your grass is getting even a little bit long. I had to go across the lawn twice to try to finish the job, and even then it would leave the wiry long tall grasses uncut and looking a mess.
I was embarrassed to be seen using this dreadful device to be honest. The build quality is bad. Even the stickers on it came off.
After two years, as the grass box filled up, it dumped the contents underneath the mower and the machine then died. The motor stopped turning the blades. I'm not sad to see it go.
I believe there is a reason why rotary mowers outsell cylinders by a long way. Perhaps if you have bowling green quality turf then a cylinder will be for you, but not a cheap one like this. Do not buy this - save yourself the money that this thing costs and spend it on a rotary mower.

Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn Mower, 11 May 2009
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
If I had looked at the bloog sites of this product I would not have purchased. Its a product doomed to failure badly designed and engineering wise it has a lot to be desired. I have an engineering degree and work background of over 45 years with engineering product reveiws of various types of industy. If it lasts the 12 months guarantee period without a major fault I will be pleasantly surprised, back to the drawing board for Bosch. Best Regards TC

Get a hover mower?, 8 May 2006
This review is from: Qualcast Elan 32 Electric Cylinder Lawn mower (DIY & Tools)
Maybe my experience with this will improve as I get used to it.
But it started off badly because the assembly instructions, printed on a scrap of paper, are pathetic. And wrong. There are screws supplied to atttach the cable tidy, but no way of screwing them into the two halves of the bit of plastic. I was in a seriously bad mood by the time I'd got it working. Everything feels crudely made. I just hope it's because it's tough.
The cable. 15m sounds a lot, but they may as well give you a metre because most people are still going to need an extension.
There's an 'easy height adjuster' on the side of the mower. Except that it isn't, because once again, it's very crude and stiff.
The motor's nice and quiet, I'll give it that, and I guess it cuts well enough.
I didn't manage to get any stripes on my lawn and I suspect that you can't have your cake and eat it: it's a very lightweight mower. That roller probably doesn't press hard enough because of that.
Oh and when you detach the grass box, half the grass falls out.
I wish I'd bought a hover mower.
