Basically a very good guide, but with some drawbacks
This is certainly a very good-looking book, with suitably luscious photographs and an easy-to-read layout. The author has clearly done some excellent research on each resort but unfortunately he doesn't write particularly well, and, surprisingly, the text includes a large number of typos throughout. Well worth the money!, 14 Jan 2004
This review is from: Resorts of Maldives (Paperback)
I bought this book about a year ago and it has become the family bible! My husband and I have visited 3 islands so far and the write ups have been spot on, the father-in-law is on about islands number 8 and also agrees that the write-ups are excellent. If we had to criticise anything, it would be that the book is now slightly out of date, if you check the internet you'll find that some that are listed as Italian only resorts are now taking British visitors and some have had name changes so it gets a little confusing. Regardless of this, the book is hugely informative and well worth buying, if only for the memories of where we've been!

Basically a very good guide, but with some drawbacks, 4 Dec 2003

This is certainly a very good-looking book, with suitably luscious photographs and an easy-to-read layout. The author has clearly done some excellent research on each resort but unfortunately he doesn't write particularly well, and, surprisingly, the text includes a large number of typos throughout. I found this a bit off-putting.Also, the book lacks a handy "at-a-glance" overview or categorisation of the resorts. Rather than 90 resorts listed in alphabetical order, I could have done with some kind of break-down (such as "child-friendly resorts" or "best for peace & quiet" or "excellent dining") to make it slightly easier to wade through the book. Still, now I've read about all 90 of them from A - Z I feel pretty well equipped to book my holiday!

Trying to find this book?, 21 Oct 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Resorts of Maldives (Paperback)
I found this book by searching for the website of the company who publish it, there you will find contact details for the author who will post you a copy on receipt of a cheque. We received our copy very promptly and are now looking forward to studying it intensely to plan our next trip to the Maldives.

Picking the perfect spot in paradise, 2 Jan 2010
We are heading off to the Maldives next September on honeymoon. With thousands of islands and 26 atolls we're finding it very difficult to chose where to go, so I bought this book hoping it would help.
The book covers most of the resorts in the Maldives, and offers information on the different types of room, features of the Island such as if it has a house reef, number of bars and restaurants, spa, pools, lagoon, activities and so on. It is also very honest about the atmosphere of each resort, what looks attractive in the brochure could actually be a very brash party resort or a slightly run down resort currently undergoing substantial renovations.
Each resort gets a double page spread, one page for photos and one for a description and critique of the resort. The price of dives, drinks, intensity of accommodation and quality of beach is also laid out clearly for easy comparison between resorts.
The book made me consider things I otherwise would not have considered, such as orientation of the sun in relation to the resort, whether the beach is natural or pumped sand. It also details who visits the resorts, which is great as I did not realise some resorts catered almost exclusively to a single nationality.
The book was published in 2007, and unfortunately that's quite a long time in the travel industry. The Maldives was badly hit by the tsunami in 2004, and many resorts were closed. Quite a few of these were still closed when the book was written, but have since reopened. I've found this to be the case with a couple of resorts we're considering visiting, and its disappointing that the book does not cover all the resorts. In addition some resorts were not revisited for the 2007 edition and their review from the old book used, which is disappointing as they could have changed substantially in the 4 years between books.
Logically I know there are a lot of review sites where I can find real people's experiences of the resorts, however I really did find this book invaluable. The author reviews destinations for a living, and he does raise points which I think a lot of holiday makers wouldn't be aware of or even consider.

Resort of Maldives, 17 May 2009
This book is excellent. The best book I have seen that tells you all about each resort. You can then make an informed decision as to which resort/island you choose. If you are thinking of going to the Maldives get this book first.

Excellent !, 19 Feb 2009
The one and only manual to find a resort that suits your expectations at the Maldives. 'What You Read Is What You Get', no expectations-vs-reality shock.
