Sew it up - Sew good., 24 Nov 2008
I bought this book by mistake, having not been paying proper attention at the time - I was expecting a purely project-based book, not the sewing manual that showed up. A quick flick through the book proved it was one of the better mistakes that I have made. This is a book to keep by the sewing machine. I found the tutorials to be clear for the most part, with simple and more advanced techniques clearly laid out. My only criticism is that some of the fabric used obscures some of the sewing. From my point of view, I would have preferred two different, plain fabrics when being shown how to inset a square, for example - the small, random print used doesn't show the technique to best advantage.
Definitely worth purchasing.

Beautiful, practical and inspiring, 29 Oct 2008
From the moment you start flicking through the pages of this book it's clear that it's something you'll keep and use forever, whether it's for the sound instruction on sewing techniques, the cool projects, the gorgeous colour photos of beautiful tactile textiles, or the countless hints and tips that will help you improve as you go on. This is a beautiful item, and a steal at the price. You'll have made your money back making any of the projects included rather than buying them, and be proud of yourself to boot. The step by step illustrated instructions make each technique and each project an undaunting process. They are very clearly explained so even the beginner will feel confident. But this isn't just for the beginner, even the experienced seamstress or seamster will find inspiration within. I've mainly been a patchwork/interiors person but I'm now having a go at accessories and things with zips in which I just didn't have the confidence to try before getting this book. If you're even remotely tempted by getting creative with fabric, buy this book and get stuck in! You won't regret it!

An inspirational book for credit-crunch time, 25 Oct 2008
I don't own a sewing machine and can barely sew on a button, but this is a book that makes me think I should change both those things. I saw it in the home of a much more creative friend and rushed out to buy it for myself. Ruth Singer (can that really be her name? How wonderful) seems to want to take me by the hand and persuade me I can do things I've never thought of doing. If I hurry I might even get some unique and not-too-expensive Christmas presents made.

Mightily impressed by book and contents, 8 April 2009
I am mightily impressed with this book. Ruth shares her techniques of producing some great and very wearable objects in understandable detail for someone who usually learns best by watching, rather than reading. The detailed information about the importance of pressing, finishing and setting up an effective and efficent workspace is useful and much appreciated.
Lastly, I was blown away by the quality of the photography, book and hardback bookbinding. I buy a lot of textile, art and how-to books on-line and this one is the best so far for quality of book, instruction, illustrations and contents generally. Well done!

An inspiring book to be enjoyed and cherished, 21 Sep 2009
My husband treated me to this book last Christmas and and so glad he did! Not only is it a beautiful book to look at; with gorgeous photography, step by step project illustrations and printed on top quality paper, it's also thoroughly inspiring, easy to read and the only book about sewing you'll ever need.
I'm a total beginner to sewing and have been thoroughly enjoying working my way through this book over the past nine months and having a go at the projects. This is definitely a book that you'll want to read from cover to cover, savouring every page and trying out each up to date, practical and modern project. Ruth is very informative and very clearly explains everything you need to know from setting up your sewing area, basic stitches by hand and machine through to fancier decorative techniques, customising and recycling your clothes.
I'm the world's greatest fan of recycling, but this is certainly a book that I shall never recycle - I shall be keeping it forever, it's an absolute joy to own and I would throughly recommend it.
