5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide to the Maldives.
This guide scores five stars. From the moment I started reading, I couldn't put it down. A must for the traveller or arm chair traveller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but how useful is it?
I bought this book before a trip I took to Sun Island in the south Ari atoll in April 2004. I always buy a guide book before I travel to learn more about the country that I'm going to, the history etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide to the Maldives., 12 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This guide scores five stars. From the moment I started reading, I couldn't put it down. A must for the traveller or arm chair traveller.

The guide is a handy, wipe clean, pocket-sized guide. The reader is captivated from the very beginning. The book takes the reader on a journey, starting with the history of the Island Nation, leading to Politics, Environmental Issues, Culture, First Aid and Information about each of the Tourist Resorts.

The book contains useful summary information in little boxes, with a starfish border. The boxes provide interesting facts about; "How Atolls are formed?" "Coral Bleaching," "Snorkelling and Diving" and a useful Medical checklist.

The guide also contains information about what to pack and what not to pack. Until I read the guide, I was unaware that Maldivian Government confiscates Cosmopolitan, because they regard it as a pornographic book. The guide explains that travellers have to be careful with Crucifixes and pocket Bibles. Alcohol and drugs are also banned. If you are a Backpacker, then I urge you to heed the advice about visas and visiting inhabited islands.

I would personally recommend any traveller reading the comprehensive medical advice the author provides, as although a Paradise, the Maldives can have a fatal beauty. Common sense is the best policy.

I loved the layout of this guide, filled with colour photos, to wet my appetite and maintain my interest. There was also a guide to the most 14 common marine species, but it's insufficient for the devoted diver. These pictures were based on hand drawings. There are excellent descriptions of the best dive sites, together with a guide about Diving and Snorkelling Safety and equipment hire.

The guide provides a section of contact addresses; British Consulate, tour operators and the island resorts. Telephone numbers and web addresses are listed, but could have changed. There is also a Lonely Planet website, showing some pages of the guide and tourist feedback. Future publications are updated by some of this feedback and the guide welcomes updates.

On the outside of the book, there are Atoll markers. Information on each Atoll includes a small map and a summary of each resort island (food, accommodation and activities). I checked the account for Kuredu, with comments from Guests and the guide appears to be accurate for this resort. Before the Atoll marked sections, is a whole section devoted to Male (the Capital), providing advice about accommodation and recommended sight seeing.

For all you linguists, a few phrases of the National Language can be found towards the back of the guide. The back of the book contains a useful ruler on the edge of inside cover and conversion charts.

I have looked at other guides and concluded that they don't even come a close second. I would definitely by other Lonely Planet guides, they have thought of everything.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book but how useful is it?, 2 May 2004

I bought this book before a trip I took to Sun Island in the south Ari atoll in April 2004. I always buy a guide book before I travel to learn more about the country that I'm going to, the history etc.

The Maldives is a fairly small country and it has a "limited" history. As many people I ended up just visiting the Sun Island resort and not any other island. So even if it is a good book and you can learn some from it I'm still left with the question: how useful is it? Sun Island was just covered by a few sentences in the book and I was far more satisfied when I found a personal trip report from someone that had already been to Sun Island. So when it comes to the Maldives I would have to say that you don't really need this guide. There are so many good Internet sites where you can find a lot of information.

3.0 out of 5 stars lonely planet:the maldives, 25 May 2003
I bought this book before I went to the Maldives, and although it is very interesting in places, I didnt find it to be correct in a lot. They do say that it is hard to review the Maldives because it is all islands which you obviously cant just drop in on, so they make you aware that their review may not be exact.
Its informative, but dont think it will be as good a guide, as many of the other lonely planet books are.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy before you book your trip, 10 Feb 2007

I agree with all the people above: When you have booked your trip to the Maldives you do not need Lonely Planet to tell you where you can find the beach on the island you are staying. If you think it is interesting you might find pleasure in reading the very informative brief on Maldivian history and current political environment. Even if this is not the case, you might benefit from the complete listing and review of all resorts in operation at the time of publication. But, you need to get hold of the book before you book your trip. If you plan to dive there is also valuable information for you in the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depends on whether you like pictures..., 21 Feb 2010

It's such a petty thing to comment on and I almost hate myself for saying it but this book was just so dry. It has a lot of information and this, I guess, is what you want in a travel guide. I just found it a little dull with just a handful of pictures.

It completely depends on what you are after in a guide book, but if you need quite a few images to keep you interested, avoid this.

5.0 out of 5 stars very informative, 21 Feb 2010
This review is from: Maldives (Lonely Planet Country Guides) (Paperback)
This book is full of interesting and informative facts about the Maldives and a great overview. The size is just right - handy to carry and easy to dip into when you just want relevant facts on, say the political situation, the status of women etc. I would recommend buying the book before you plan your trip as there is a useful section on choosing your resort - we had already made all our arrangements before ordering it. Although we certainly weren't disappointed in our resort, it would have been good to read this section before booking our holiday.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty decent account, 10 Aug 2009
I first went to the maldives in 1987 and have recently been back on a holiday. Once again the lonely planet was the best pick of the available titles in the local shop. It was very useful in 1987 when I was part working and not just going to one island. Very good on Male. The new edition seems pretty much as good and reasonably well written.
If you are considering going but cant decide which island to chose then it seemed to give quite objective advice whereas most of the other books pretty much just drone on and on about the lovely beaches and sea and are not a lot of use.
If you have already booked a holiday and are just going to one island for a week then i don't think you will really get much use out of a guide book anyway. You can find out most of the stuff on the net before you go that you will need.
