Sadly disappointing. Her previous book "Carol Spencer's Style Council" was interesting and well produced. This book is a rehash of many of the items from the original book. A waste of money, 25 Sep 2002
This book is divided in several chapters, each one dedicated to a different topic (color, face, figure, grooming, wardrobe planning...) except the final one wich illustrates some makeovers performed in "ordinary people". Althoug each chapter has some interesting ideas the're so underdeveloped, there's such lack of examples the book it's almost useless. For example the chapter "figure directions" has some interesting ideas about how colors, lines, proportions and textures can truly modify the external apearance of a same garment but the print is so big,(the book is like 160 pages but can be condensed in 10) the text so short and the ideas so few you have to be truly "raw" in this matter to find something interesting. Top of it the photos are scarce too, with insufficient examples and too many times just black and white drawings. The're are some good sections anyway (that's the reason for the 2 stars): 1 - Carol approach to color is truly simple BUT usefull specially if more complex "color analysis" systems are too complicated for you to really determine your palette, season or group. This is easy and flexible, and it works. 2 - The "figure directions" chapter is also good and offers a diferent point of view than tradicional body analisis. This stresses the importance of proportions of upper body, lower body and waist instead of the traditional "pear shape","round shape" or "hourglass shape" approach. I would not praise this book, but, truth is, I have read most of what's been published in this matter and there is no "perfect" book in this subjet. No one is actually good in all the topics of color, body type, wardrobe planning and personal style. If you want a really good book on "figure flattering" try Leah Feldon "Does this make me look fat?". For wardrobe planning I would recommend Chata romano's "Plan your wardrobe with chata romano" (it has been the most usefull for me, and her makeovers are some of the more amazing yet credible I have ever seen). And for Color analysis there's plenty of "color me beautiful" books of course, but, truth is, I only keep Chata and Leah's books.

It takes a while to know your body and face shape but once u start recognising that it is so true how everything suits u so well and things that u must not have thought of. Covers everything from makeup, colour analysis, spectacles, swimsuits etc..Covers people from different nationalities like asian, british and so on. Also the wardrobe planning talks about minimum clothes that you would need and how you can mix and match with those little clothes. Thus not making it an expensive job. It also talks about celebrities and how style and image changed them.

Original and knowledgeable, 24 Jun 2005
By A Customer
Clearly this is a writer in complete control of her subject. The content of this book is to-the-point, unfussy and without the trendy/fashion focus of many other books on the subject. Because it deals with the principles of creating a successful style/look it will not date as quickly as books that are more about current fashions. The tone is practical and down-to earth. In short, it provides women with the means to make better decisions about how they can look and dress. It does NOT tell you that you have to dress a certain way if you're a particular shape, or - heaven forbid! - only wear specific colours if you have particular hair/eye/skin types. Where other books present pre-determined 'solutions' that ultimately represent a restrctive mantra and override a woman's individual style and personality, Carol gives us the means to understand the implications of the decisions we make. This consequently leaves us better-informed about successfully creating our own look, whatever that may be. It is written in a way that makes the principles behind creating a successful style easily-understandable. Simple, but not simplistic. This book is an entertaining and illuminating read, and a reference manual that you can return to time and again. Full marks.

What not to wear Susannah Constantine, Trinny Woodall, 14 Mar 2003
Great book entertaining, humourous and laid out in a manner that makes it a quick source for reference. However cant help but feel that most of the style tips were geared towards women with er...larger 'features' well more so than women lacking in certain attributes, then again, thats not a surprise skinny women are often over-looked. But i still recommend it some of the comments are just hilarious.
