First of all, I find myself wondering if this would have been published in hardback at all if it had not been written by Rowling. I found the story to be very thin, and the characters were almost like parodies of all the stereotypes you might expect in a small town. It's almost like a send-up on novels about provincial life, like Cold Comfort Farm was a parody of rural life dramas being written at the time. Although it may be over-generous to credit Rowling with doing this deliberately; I would say that constructing convincing ('real') characters in an adult novel is just not her strongpoint. Having said that, it's not a bad book. It's readable.
