I liked The Cuckoo 's Calling immensely. The follow-up is a poor second. As a devotee of crime novels, my main complaint is that it is impossible for the reader to work out who the murderer is. Strike does work it out but he must be clairvoyant because there is no distinguishing one red herring from another, and the book serves up a banquet of them. Since everyone involved with the crime is lying or obfuscating or dealing in misinformation, knowingly or not, how can the reader trace a trail to the murderer? If there are genuine clues to the murderer's identity, I must have missed them. Strike doesn't explain how he identified the killer; he appears to have had a brainwave or an intuition. Lucky Strike. I am left one unhappy reader.
