Objectively awful: blatant LOTR cash grab,

Even looking past the fact that they have mercilessly butchered one of the greatest stories of all time, this is just a bad film. One or two good moments, such as Bilbo's dialogue with Smaug (good, but even then could have been so much better), are what make this 2 stars rather than 1.
The barrel scene and overall inclusion of Legolas just make you shake your head and wonder what they were thinking. An elf falls head over heels in love with a dwarf (overcoming hundreds of years of racial eminity and isolation) in a 1 minute meeting, and oh what a surprise he's been poisoned by a morgul blade and she must use her now ubiquitous elfish magic to heal him - did they just copy and paste that part? Worst of all, Smaug; a living embodiment of power, fear and death is bamboozled by the slapstick tomfoolery of wakeboarding dwarves. Just get out Peter Jackson, get out right now and hang your head in shame.
If your only exposure to Tolkien is the LOTR films then I can see why you would like this (not saying that is a bad thing, love the LOTR trilogy). However, if you've read the books, have any affinity whatsoever with the proper Hobbit story and were hoping for a LOTR trilogy-esque depiction of one of your favourite stories, this film is not for you. This is not for fans of the book. This is an insultingly brazen LOTR cash grab. It could have been so great, but instead it's just forgettable standard issue franchised tat.
