This review is from: Rowan Atkinson's The Atkinson People (Classic BBC Radio Comedy) (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)Rowan Atkinson is rightly held as one of the best comedians England has ever produced, not only by members of the public but he is highly regarded amongst his peers. On a personal level he is, of course, one of my favourites and so it was with a great deal of anticipation that I ordered this item in the hope of some wonderful comedy.
This is a 2 CD offering which consists of two episodes per disk with each episode lasting approximately 30 minutes. Naturally starring Rowan Atkinson, who scripted the shows with Richard Curtis, each episode profiles a fictional famous person: Sir Corin Basin is an actor, raconteur and general bore who talks to just about anyone who will listen. Sir Benjamin Fletcher is master orator; George Dupont is a French thinker who remains an enigma and Barry Good is a Pop music star. All of whom interact with other characters played by Hugh Thomas and Peter Wilson.
For me, I sadly found the listening experience a rather disappointing one. The writing is somewhat lacklustre and although there are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments they are too few and don't last long, with one episode not containing one funny moment at all.
For those moments that do make you laugh it simply emphasises the really weak material that the overall thing is. I did find the entire experience a real effort to get through and unless you wish to own everything that Rowan Atkinson ever produced or performed simply for prosperity I would urge you not to purchase this item and save your money for something else.
