Great series, shame about the DVDs,
This review is from: Babylon 5: Season 3 [DVD] (DVD)
The chances are that if you're looking at these DVDs then you're already aware of the Babylon 5 story. You've probably already got copies of the episodes on video and, like me, are looking to 'upgrade' to the better picture and sound quality that DVD provides.
I won't be buying this on DVD because the first two seasons transfers were so disappointing that I can't see any reason for trading in my old VHS video copies (besides shelf space). On the first two seasons the 'widescreen' effect on the episodes meant that every scene that involved CGI computer effects was truncated to fit the frame. This was VERY annoying, and by reading the other reviews here I feel sure that the same problem is with the season 3 DVDs.
This is a great shame because I do love Babylon 5 and have been really looking forward to the DVD releases, but when you end up watching the video copies of those you have on DVD (because of the above mentioned problems), why bother buying the DVD.
Also the DVDs have missed the opportunity to put in any deleted scenes, concept design work, etc. (You only have to look at the excellent Farscape DVDs to see what should have been included)
So I'd give 4/5 for the season but have only given 3/5 for the DVD because of the 'digital transfer' faults. If you own the videos then I really wouldn't bother with the DVDs at all. Just get hold of the excellent Jane Killick 'Season By Season' guide books and re-watch those old videos.
