Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Village Green Preservation Society (Audio CD)
I confess to not really reading the full specs when i bought it but i was pleased to discover the extra tracks and stereo versions of the songs on the CD as well as the original album tracklist.
However i was a bit disappointed by some of the stereo versions, I'm not sure if they have been re-mastered in stereo in more recent times or back in the 60's but the results are not that great i find.
In some cases hardly worth it and don't add much to the original, and just ends up seemingly having certain songs twice on one CD. Maybe it's one for the collectors who want all versions of every song. not for me.
In any case, technical aspects aside, i bought the album for the tracks i was looking for (Picture Book, Village Green Preservation Society, VIllage Green) and to discover more of the same and I was not disappointed overall. As an expat i loved the very British feel to the whole album, very evocative of some kind of (slightly mythical) previous era of Britain. Personally some of the tracks I didn't know were a bit too vaudeville / music hall for my tastes, and made me cringe (All of My Friends were There, Phenomenal Cat) but some i loved, and were a real discovery (Last of the Steam Powered Trains).
But in the end the Kinks output was so varied there is something for most tastes, and ergo some stuff you're not going to like.
Overall very pleased i bought it, i feel i know the Kinks better and understand Ray Davies' songwriting more.
