This review is from: Trishna [DVD] (DVD)
After the promise of an exotic setting for the story based on Hardy's Tess of D'Urbervilles, hype and Freida Pinto no less, the overall experience of watching this film was, well underwhelming. Pinto's undoubtedly stunning but oddly flat and it wasn't sad to come to the end of the film. Once was enough - perhaps cinematically better than in your living room if you must see this.

T. Gibbons says:
You've missed a trick there. This is a clever modernisation of the epic novel. Watch it again, forgetting the hype, and as a piece of art in its own right and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The film is an interesting critic of modern India, but one need to read between the lines to fully appreciate it.

M. J. Sweaney says:
The character of Trishna (being based on Tess) is supposed to be passive and subservient. She doesn't make things happen, things happen to her over which she mostly has no control due to her position in the economic and social structure. The fact that she is also very beautiful is key to her tragedy and on all counts I thought Freida Pinto was excellent in the part.

Miss Scarlett says:
The idea to modernise it by setting it in India was very clever. The execution was weak.
