Mr. Bhattacharya's book is a triumph!,

This review is from: The Gabriel Club (Hardcover)
Mr. Bhattacharya's novel is a rich, multi-layered detective story that quickly draws readers into the strange and byzantine world of Eastern European politics, culture and historical memory. Mr. Bhattacharya's colorful, intricate prose is well-matched to the attention to detail he brings to even the most minor incidents and characters in his beautiful and sometimes frightening first novel. Set in Communist Hungary's dissident underworld during the late 1970's and the years immediately following the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, The Gabriel Club is the story of a group of students struggling against a repressive regime and against their own sense of fatalism with their own lives and the historical legacy of their nation. The intrigue and mystery in this story are as deep and dark as the Danube of which Mr. Bhattacharya writes with such love. Mr. Bhattacharya's novel is that rare book: one that deserves a second read. The Gabriel Club is a fascinating novel from a major new talent and a window onto the divided loyalties and memories of post-totalitarian Eastern Europe for those new or familiar with the subject.
