A pretty effective and creepy film.,
This review is from: Them [DVD] (DVD)
This is not an in yer face slasher movie it is something more insidious.
Yes it is a fairly short movie, it does have sub-titles (you could learn French!), you do twig part way through who "they" are but notwithstanding that it does build up the suspense fairly well.
I doubt very much it is based on an actual true story but certain aspects of it will ring a bell with many people. It combines two of the major modern fears, intruders in the house and the almost feral nature of some parts of society. The fact that it has such a downbeat ending wins it extra points for me.
The villains of this piece do have a little too much of the Jason Voorhees/Michael Myers ability to keep getting up when they really should stay down, a little too much poetic licence here.
The making of documentary is interesting, the cast do get a few real injuries making the movie. The recovered footage is a poor advertising gimmick and does carry some Blair Witch baggage.
I agree It is not a film that will lend itself to repeat viewings but it gets good marks for trying to be different.
I sincerely hope that This film does not get the Spoorloos treatment. George Sluizer's superb 1988 Dutch horror was totally ruined when it was remade for American audiences as The Vanishing, amazingly Sluizer himself directed that dire remake. That original film also had a truly downbeat ending which was considered not suitable for American audiences. You dread to think what such an attitude would do with the material here.
