Fatally Flawed Collection,
This review is from: Wastelands: Stories of the Apocalypse (Paperback)I bought this book as, like many other reviewers, I am a big fan of the Post-Apocalyptic genre. Having now read half of this collection I have had enough and am returning it to Amazon. Hopefully this review will save you wasting your time as I did mine.
If you enjoy reading John Christopher's 'Death of Grass', 'Wrinkle on the Skin', 'World in Winter' etc, Terry Nation's 'Survivors' novel, 'Day of The Triffids' or (as an American set book and one of the best) 'Earth Abides' you will find nothing similar to tempt you here.
The stories are very Americentric with too much of a fantasy type feel to them and are generally set way far in the future after whatever disaster has occurred. Consequently they do not deal with the crucial act of survival in the face of irrevocable change to society which is, to me and I imagine many others, the appeal of the PA genre.
The collection is additionally hampered as, these being short stories, the characters and situations fail to engage, evolve or, indeed, survive at all themselves.
