For me The Handbook of Logistics and Distribution Management 5th ed. is the complete logistics bible. It contains everything from the management of humanitarian logistics to the cost of standard tasks associated with logistics management - making it practical, informative and interesting.
At the most basic level it provides a clear and simple operational guide covering everything from common abbreviations used in the sector to vehicle selection.
The book also seeks to address how you integrate logistics with other business functions to help ensure efficiency and maximise value. This is important because it recognises that logistics itself is a complex system set within a complex organisation and that the organisation itself is part of a wider unpredictable world. The book uses a range of real life examples to illustrate how a more holistic, interdependent understanding of the role of logistics, can decrease costs and increase efficiency and ultimately increase profitability, as opposed to a more siloed approach to logistics
