4.0 out of 5 stars MAINLY GOOD, COULD DO BETTER, 1 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Rigoletto: Metropolitan Opera (Levine) [DVD] [2004] [NTSC] (DVD)
In this production The Met does what it does best, extensive, expansive sets, and beautiful costumes.
Domingo is a less than exuberant Duke, though in good voice.
McNeill is pretty reasonable and gets better as he goes on, but the opening belongs to John Cheek he does a ringing, powerful Monterone. Diaz is a credible Sparafucile, he has a good line in low notes.
Cotrubas is fine in voice but can hardly pass herself off as a young protected girl, don't look too close and enjoy the voice.
I do have a thing about Ariel Bybee, her Giovanna is very pleasing,I just love her voice, but she always seems to turn up in suppport roles.
In act two I would single out McNeill in "Cortegiani, vil razza donnata" I find it quite moving. Cotrubas sings her confession beautifully, she really does have a wonderful voice, but she still looks incongruent.
In act three I like the split set. one side, street, the other Sparafuciles two level house.
Of course Domingo is in fine voice but compared with any of the many Alvarez productions he is a polite and rather gentlemanly Duke. Isola Jones however is a voluptuous Maddalena with a magnificent contralto.
The voice balance in the quartet is possibly the best of any of the versions that I have heard.
To summarise, Domingo disappointing, Cotrubas, fine voice but does not look the part. McNeill excellent on all counts. Support singers all very good.
There are a few extras on the disc including interviews. The glossy booklet has all one would expect, Numbered Arias detailed synopsis and some interesting production notes.

Rigoletto: Metropolitan Opera (Mariotti) [DVD] [2013]
This review has nothing to do with the NY Met Live in HD production of 2013 !!!
A completely different cast and production.

my review is for the 1977 production with Cornell Macneil. If it has appeared elsewhere I am afraid it is an amazon glitch
