One of my favourite romantic-comedies,
This review is from: Chasing Liberty [DVD] (DVD)
Finding a good romantic-comedy these days can be somewhat of a challenge despite the huge variety available. They tend to either be too romantic at the expense of the comedy, too humorous at the expense of the romance, too cheesy or worse than anything falling into the slap-stick genre. Thankfully this is not the case with Chasing Liberty, a cute, lovable romantic comdy starring Mandy Moore and Matthew Goode.
Okay the story is far from original. Mandy Moore is the daughter of the President of America, which means she cannot lead a normal life doing the things that other teenagers can do like going on dates without an army of security guards in her mist. Alas she runs away to find adventure befriending Matthew Goode in the process, how ever what she doesn't know is that Matthew has a few secrets, the main one being that he is one of her father's secret service assigned to protect her. Yes it's a tad predictable. It's easy to see where the story is going but what saves this story from falling into the scrap heap is the clever script that manages to combine witty one-liners with romantic quips.
What also sets this movie above other romantic-comedies most notably the latest 'First Daughter' is that the two leads are very likable. Personally I've always been a fan of Mandy Moore and she doesn't fail to disappoint in this movie as she plays the cute, giddy, spontaneous girl desperately searching for freedom. As the male lead Matthew Goode provides a good balance to Moore's lively personality being more reserved and hesitant but aboveall adorable as he struggles to contain his growing feelings for his boss's daughter. Obviously it helps that he's drop dead gorgeous and has an accent to die for. Together the two have a nice little chemistry going on that will have you grinning in the chair.
What also works well with this movie is that unlike so many romantic-comedies money has clearly been invested into this one as can be seen from the diverse locations. With filming locations in Washington, Berlin, Venice, London, Austria and Plague it is clear that an effort has been made to create a memorable and visually stunning movie, that if it does nothing else it will at least entice you to do some long-put-off travelling.
To conclude I'd highly recommend this movie for a good girly night or some mother-daughter time or even a date movie because believe me there are jokes enough to keep the male mind functioning.
