"IT `S ALRIGHT"; FOR A CD, THOUGH!,
21 Dec 2007
This review is from: A Trick Of The Tail: Hybrid SACD + DVD (Audio CD)
I had never expected this to be superior to a good vinyl-pressing, but I must admit that the great bottom with the bass-pedals really rocks. In one way or another a CD version of something released and mixed originally for the vinyl medium is bound to have some kind of flaw.
The main ugliness here comes to show in treble-area, which is sometimes too overblown and takes the atmosphere out of tracks like "Entangled".
One thing I do not understand is why the Italian single B-side only track "It`s Alright"(which is the introduction to "Los Endos" with sung lyrics") is not included with this release.
Else, there is positive moments concerning the extras, especially the three promo videos.
The "In Concert"-film is a necessity to have on an broadly available official release(it is really great!), but is also a big disappointment when it comes to the audio.
It is overblown with treble and the fat bass-drums of both Bill and Phil is destroyed by compression. And why do think I would want to say this?
Well, I saw this tour. The pirate copies(which seems to be the only alternative listen to a representative example of how Genesis sounded with Bruford - the live tracks from "Seconds Out" and "Three Sides Live" are poorly mixed compared to reality) of the Japanese laser-disc version of this has a much better sound, especially when you turn up the bass.
Why don`t all of you trick of the tailers sign the online petition to get a whole show from this tour released? In my opinion, Genesis with Bruford was a very unique effort and sounded like a hungry band on their way to something new. Despite what was lost in vocal qualities when Phil took the lead microphone - although he did a tremendous job - was equally weighed up by the most vibrant and creative rhythm-section Genesis ever had. When "Wind" came out, it was quite evident that they did not focus on that perspective at all in their future thinking.
