This review is from: The Complete Plain Words (Paperback)
I bought this book on the strength of the previous reviews. I wanted to improve my grammar & punctuation. After starting to read some of this book I became even more confused. Don't buy this book unless you already have a very strong foundation in grammar & punctuation.

I understand why this book wasn't useful to you. It is not about the basics of writing clear and simple English; it is about the basics of writing good official English, and although it's very clear it is actually a pretty advanced textbook in the subject, and is not much use to someone who just feels at sea when trying to write basic English. From what you say, you sound like you need a foundation text. One good one is Oxford's recent book 'New Hart's Rules', which is full of concise information on basic punctuation and grammar. Alternatively, you may need more education-oriented material on writing English.
