Fast and Flashy,
This review is from: Faster [Blu-ray] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
'Faster' is a revenge action film that released in 2010 to negative reviews, however managed to do alright at the box-office although it under-performed.
The movie centres around Dwayne Johnson, know as the driver, who is out for revenge after a personal tragedy. As he attempts to trace the wrongdoers he is pursued by a hitman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and a soon to retire cop (Billy Bob Thornton).
The movie is a fully charged stylish action-fest from start to finish. The blast of full throttle violence caters perfectly for junkies of the genre. There are also a few twists throughout the feature.
Right the flaws, well the plot is wafer-thin, acting is poor barring Mr. Johnson and the whole film including the climax is predicatble. But, I get a feeling that the makers weren't bothered about anything else apart from making a popcorn entertainer for fans who love a straight forward vendetta movie.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson shines as the main protagonist. He looks cool in the part and is menacing with his buffed-up physique. He doesn't have many dialogues but does the talking when hunting the enemies. Billy Bob Thornton is out of sorts but thats probably down to the poor characterisation. Oliver Jackson-Cohen as the killer is pure and simple horrendous. His acting and accent sticks out like a sore thumb. The makers could've done without his character, it's pointless.
Full marks to George Tillman, Jr. for the cool picturisation and nice action set-pieces. Zero marks for plot, characterisation, poor dialogue and extracting poor performances. This movie could've been a classic if these things were paid attention to.
The background score by Clint Mansell for me is one of the top scores of 2010. The classic Rock music is superb and and the general score is enjoyable.
The visual quality of the Blu-ray is very fine with all the colours defined. I found the picture to be really crisp and slick. The HD MA 5.1 Dolby Digital sound format is ear pleasing for the action fans. The explosions, gun shots, revving engine sound and the dialogue are all clearly separated. The sound-effects are heart-thumping.
'Faster' rattles along with stylish and adrenaline fueled action, however forgets the plot. Nonetheless, as an action fan, I was entertained.
