This review is from: The Sweeney [DVD] (DVD)
Back in its day The Sweeney was ground-breaking British TV being more hard-hitting, morally ambiguous, realistic and violent than anything before. As a period piece to watch now it's entertaining to see the 70s depicted and still has good enough actors and plots to be very entertaining. This film has none of the above. It's not a period thriller. The acting dialogue is dire. The plot isn't remotely believable. Quite why the Flying Squad are 10 floors up in an anodyne business tower in Docklands is anyone's guess. Ray Winstone is typecast as a violent cockney but is too old and fat to carry it off. As for his love scenes, well they're embarrassing for all the wrong reasons. It's charmless tosh.
