Straight out of the box the scanner head is unable to move, gets stuck and screeches until I turn it off, probably due to broken tracks or motors. Now I have to pay to send it back. Too bad I don't have anything to print the return slip with. Thanks Canon!

Exactly the same thing with me. Thought I was going mad with it scanning blank pages and screeching at me - then I realised the scanner head wasn't moving!! Back in the box it goes.

A. Weckmann says:
There's a sliding button on the bottom of the scanner that is probably in "lock" position. If the lock is activated the scanner will act as you describe. Just slide that button to unlock and it will work perfectly.

Canon Locks the scanner head so it does not slide about and gets damaged during transit. Simply look underneath a nd there is a slider button underneath just slide to unlock and the scanner will work. This is actually stated in the Quick Start Guide (English/French version)
So I suggest that buyers of this product read the instruction documents or Quick Start guides before returning this item as faulty as it looks like people are not reading them before installing the scanner
