Very poor transfers regarding sound quality...picture quality excellent.,

This review is from: Edgar Wallace Mysteries - Volume 3 [DVD] (DVD)
This is a terribly wasted opportunity by Network, because the films themselves are excellent and well worth seeing, but I agree wholeheartedly with other reviewers about the poor quality of the sound on these transfers (the sound was perfect on the original films). I bought two volumes (2 and 3) and the sound on them is very poor...the equivalent of putting a thick blanket over the loud speaker to muffle the sound or of playing a record with a very blunt needle. The worst episode for poor sound on volume 3 is "Solo For Sparrow". The episodes were remastered by BBC Resources, who initially mixed up all the reels on 'Attempt to Kill' on volume 2 and the set had to be withdrawn by Network while the fault was put right...something they wouldn't have had to do if they had tested the DVDs before release, so Network are just as much to blame for the poor sound quality for this same reason. They seem to have no quality control department and outsource the remastering to BBC Resources and hope for the best. Well, that just isn't good enough. Will I be wasting my money on the other five volumes in this series? In a word, no, as the sound quality has been reported as poor on all the volumes. This is a terrible shame, as, like many others, I've been waiting for a proper release of these films for many years, having initially shown them when I was a cinema projectionist in the 1960s. The sets are very expensive considering they all have faulty sound and Network should either withdraw them from sale or put the price of each volume right down to, say, £4 each and then cancel their remastering contract with BBC Resources and have the whole lot done again by some other company. When word gets around about the poor sound quality on these sets, sales of them will probably drop like a stone and buyers may fight shy of buying anything else off Network in case the sound is just as bad on those.
