4.0 out of 5 stars Another Hazlewood Rarity., 29 Sep 2012
This review is from: Movin' On (Audio CD)
Another rare album from Lee Hazlewood's Swedish Period. It was originally recorded in 1977 and only released outside of Sweden in 2009 although it has not been well received by critics or, indeed, Hazlewood fans. It may lack the quality of such gems as "Requiem For An Almost Lady", "Lee Hazlewood - ism: Its Cause And Cure" or his stellar work with Nancy Sinatra but it still has much to commend it.

There are two wonderful songs from "Requiem" - "Come On Home" and "LA Lady" written by Lee and re-recorded for this album. The inclusion of these two tracks alone will ensure that the album does not disappoint.

There is an earthy, bluesy reading of Randy Newman's "Wait Till Next Year" countered by the simplicity of the tender and poignant "It's For My Dad" written by Lana Chapel. Equally poignant is "The Rising Star" penned by Bob Saunders about an aspiring rock musician, on the road, getting high and cheating on his wife. Another country song from Saunders is the bouncy "Mother Country Music" recalling the sound of Johnny Cash and June Carter.

Lee was always comfortable with Lounge music and delights in the big band swing of "It Was A Very Good Year", the Ervin Drake classic and the beautiful "Paris Bells" written by Jon Mark.

This is not an album for the Hazlewood neophyte, more for the committed Hazlewood collector. He certainly made albums with stronger material, mainly self composed, but it is a reminder of a singular talent who made music on his own terms in a self imposed exile.
