Great for engineers working with BS7671,
This review is from: Wiring Regulations in Brief: A complete guide to the requirements of the 16th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations, BS 7671 and Part P of the Building Regulations (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book for engineers working with BS7671 who are not electricians.
By grouping the coverage into functional areas such as isolation, earthing, etc. the book makes an extremely easy reference to learn from, and quote from. Each explanation is accompanied by the text of the standard and a reference to the standard paragraph number. This is all in plain text that any engineer can understand without needing to be a qualified electrician. This is an ideal reference to have around and refer to in explaining to the layman why an electrician is required.
While the electricity at work regulations apply to all businesses in the UK, understanding of electrical safety is all to frequently lacking. This book bridges the gap providing explanation, justification, and reference. It can also aid in specifying electrical works, and in conducting your own safety checks prior to commencing non-electrical work.
This book won't make you an electrician, and won't enable you to do-it-yourself. It will enable you to cut through conjecture and confusion, and understand what you are looking for. As an engineer and a manager, I'm sure it will become one of the best used books on my bookshelf.
The one area that it falls down on is equipment with high earth leakage current. This is covered by a separate part of the standard, and doesn't get very much coverage beyond a quick quote of the standard. With more computers and electronic devices containing switched mode power supplies, I'm told this part of the standard applies more frequently. Further advice may be required from a qualified electrician.
