Excellent in all respects - great picture and good aesthetics,
This review is from: Sony KDL-46EX500 46 -inch LCD 1080 pixels 100 Hz TV (Electronics)
I am a bit of a tecky and have had this TV for 9 months now (by ordering from Belgium) and am very pleased in all respects.
The set has a great picture from all sources I have thrown at it including my Sony Blu Ray player (S370) my cable TV decoder box, and off air channels via the aerial. Image seems bright and crisp and great to me right into the corners.
Theatre mode is good when watching in the dark if you want to get that cinema feel (it seemingly makes the picture darker, less sharp, and more cinematic and the stereo spread seems wider too).
I like that it automatically switches to display my sony bluray player when I switch the player on. However it doesn't automatically switch to display my cable TV box when I switch that on so it seems to give priority to sony devices.
The auto image mode always seems to select the right screen proportions (widescreen, zoom etc).
I like the way the image goes right to the edge of the screen. Many other screens seem to have an additional inner bevel/border round them as well as the main casing which to me doesn't look as cool. The set generally looks good in my living room, embarassing 'lesser' screens I have had previously.
The sound is ok as flat screens go, but wont substitute for running it through a hi-fi. As always you seem to need to turn the sound up significantly to get a decent bit of volume out of a dvd when compared with normal tv - and then when you switch back to watching normal tv it blares out - but this happens all set ups I have had.
It has a usb port and it streamed my DivX/Avi and MP4 films fine from both a bog standard portable hard disk and usb flash drives.
Apart from updating the firmware via internet I haven't bothered with any of the other internet content it offers or wifi options so can't comment.
Remote is good quality and inexplicably also has a button to switch the TV off on the underside of the handset as well as the traditional on/off button in the top right of the remote. Handy that the remote can also almost control your other Sony devices with Bravia sync - it doesn't have a pause button however so I still find myself reaching for my sony bluray remote.
Swivels left and right but doesn't angle up or down.
I am definitely pleased I paid the extra few quid and got a Sony. Picture is excellent and I would recommend it. I can't find any real downsides despite a critical eye.
