3.0 out of 5 stars Not for Novice Knitters, 3 Mar 2011
This review is from: Blankets and Throws to Knit: Patterns and Piecing Instructions for 100 Knitted Squares (Paperback)
Although this is a lovely book, it is not for the novice knitter. Each project is a single entity, i.e. it is not possible to mix and match the squares. Many of the squares do not have a pattern as such, merely a chart to follow which, unless you have been knitting for a long time and are able to tell what the stitches are, is impossible to do. In my view too many of the patterns are in chart form. I am sure it wouldn't have been too difficult to write out the instructions for some of the simpler patterns so new knitters could have made brave attempts at knitting them. So lovely to look at, but not much use unless you are an expert knitter or particularly good at reading charts!

I absolutely agree with you, the charts are extremely difficult to follow and a pattern or even a larger chart would have been helpful. The charts don't have well defined lines making it hard to count stitches and rows and the pages of the book are shiny, making the charts hard to read and my eyes were strained after 30 minutes. I resorted to enlarging the charts by 20% on a colour photo copier. The book is beautiful to look at and the designs are lovely but it is supposed to be a book of knitting patterns. I am disappointed with this book.

Agree whole-heartedly with what @chris above says. I wonder, though, if you can recommend a better book with this kind of pattern?
